Vol. 8, No. 98
Homeward Bound: Homeland Security Secretary Kiersten Nielsen has taken the fall for the swell of immigrants seeking asylum at the southern border that’s making President Trump very unhappy.
Nielsen resigned yesterday at the end of a meeting in which they were unable to agree on how to stem the tide of migrants at the border. She refused to break the law to please the President.
Even so, her letter hewed to the Trump party line, saying, “I hope that the next secretary will have the support of Congress and the courts in fixing the laws which have impeded our ability to fully secure America’s borders and which have contributed to discord in our nation’s discourse.”
Nielsen is the 12thcabinet level official to leave the Trump administration in just over two years. It’s an unprecedented number.
Trump praised Nielsen in public and battered her in private, berating her for allowing asylum seekers into the country as required by law.Her departure comes just days after Trump withdrew his nominee to run Customs and Border Protection because he wanted to go in “a tougher direction.”
At Homeland Security, Nielsen will be replaced temporarily by Kevin McAleenan, who’s now commissioner of Customs and Border Protection.
Nielsen’s legacy is that she reigned over unusual cruelty to migrants seeking safety in the United States, in particular, the separation of children from their families. On Friday the government admitted in a court filing that it may take two years to reunite thousands of families.
Permawar:Fighting has reached the outskirts of Tripoli as the rebel Libyan National Army, backed by the United Arab Emirates, is attacking the capital in an attempt to overthrow the United Nations backed government.
Both sides launched airstrikes over the weekend and residents of Tripoli reported indiscriminate artillery fire hitting homes. The LNA claims to have captured Tripoli’s international airport, but the government denies it.
Downrange:Chicago is still suffering an extraordinary amount of gun violence. At least 24 people were shot in the city between 4 am Saturday and 10 am Sunday, The Chicago Tribunereports. In one of the worst incidents, six people were wounded, including an 8-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl, after two men opened fire on a baby shower in West Englewood.
Weather Report:Nasty weather is sweeping into the Southeast today. About 26 million people could be affected by severe storms moving east across the Gulf Coast states. The National Weather Service says storms with “damaging wind gusts and hail will be possible from Georgia and eastern Tennessee northeastward across the Carolinas into southeastern Virginia on Monday, as well as over northern Mississippi and western Alabama.”
Hoop Dreams:Baylor won the NCAA women’s basketball championship for the third time in 10 years in a match that could barely have been closer. Arike Ogunbowale of Notre Dame had two free throws in the final seconds and missed one of them, giving Baylor the win at 82-81.
The Baylor women are known as the “Lady Bears.” Why in this age are women’s teams still identified separately as “Lady?”
Texas Tech and Virginia play tonight for the men’s title.
Swamp Things:Burmese pythons on the loose in warm southern climates have become a problem. A Big problem. Keepers at the Big Cypress National Preserve in South Florida report that they captured a 17-foot female python carrying 73 developing eggs.
Pythons can grow over 20 feet and weigh 200 pounds.
Wildlife authorities have taken to putting electronic tracking devices on male pythons and following them to the females. Men are such snakes.
