Vol. 3, No. 87
Day 21: The search area for Malaysia Flight 370 has been moved 700 miles northeast based on new data analysis suggesting that the plane was flying faster than thought and that it would have run out of fuel sooner. Search aircraft spotted floating objects in the new area, but none have been recovered.
Ukraine: The UN General Assembly passed a resolution declaring Crimea’s independence vote and annexation by Russia to be illegal. The measure puts more international pressure on Russia, although most countries, including the US, ignore UN resolutions when it suits them.
Mudslide: The search for bodies in the Washington State mudslide continues with the number of confirmed dead now at 25. Authorities say they expect the number to jump higher.
Nation: NJ Gov. Chris Christie has been cleared of wrongdoing in the George Washington Bridge closing scandal … by his own investigation. The report by lawyer Randy Mastro, who was hired and paid $1 million by the Christie administration, said, “Our investigation found that Gov. Christie did not know of the lane realignment beforehand and had no involvement in the decision to realign the lanes.” Christie critics in the state legislature say that’s not the last word. Members of the Christie administration are accused of closing lanes on the bridge last September to cause a traffic jam in Ft. Lee, punishing the town’s mayor for not supporting Christie for re-election.
>For anyone who ever checked a bag there’s a small bit of justice. Police at Los Angeles International Airport yesterday busted a ring of baggage handlers who rifled through passengers’ bags, stealing jewelry, electronics, and just about anything that could be ripped in a few seconds.
>The 22-year-old woman who pushed her newlywed husband off a cliff in Glacier National Park last July was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Jordan Linn Graham pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, avoiding a life sentence. In her guilty plea last December she told the court she was having doubts only days after marrying … evidently, serious doubts.
World: The body of a Pakistani woman who worked vaccinating children against Polio was found showing signs of torture and riddled with bullets. Unidentified gunmen took Salma Farooqi from her home overnight Sunday after beating her husband and tying up her children. Polio has been conquered in most of the world but remains an epidemic in Pakistan, where militants have killed 30 polio workers since 2012. Some mullahs have preached that the oral vaccine makes children sterile.
Autism: A paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine says autism begins to develop in the brain when a baby is still in the womb. Scientists say they observed abnormalities in how the brain wires up for social and emotional behavior and language. The finding gives hope that an infant’s developing brain can be re-trained and re-wired to reduce the effects of autism.
Bombs Away: The colonel in charge of nuclear missiles in Montana resigned and the Air Force fired nine mid-level officers for their responsibility in a test-cheating scandal among the personnel who man the nuclear missile force. The problem was fed by a “zero defect” policy for performance and advancement in the missile corps. Speaking in Pentagonese, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James told reporters, “We do have some systemic issues in our missile community.”
B-F-R: A rat the size of a large cat is the talk of Sweden after it was trapped in a Stockholm kitchen. The rat ate its way through wood and concrete to access a ventilation pipe and enter the home. It was 16 inches long, not counting the tail, and quickly became known across Sweden as “Ratzilla.”
