Poke in the Eye: CBS yesterday kicked out chief network executive Les Moonves after a second New Yorker article detailing accusations of sexual impropriety by six women.
Moonves is one of Hollywood’s most powerful executives, having made CBS the most watched television network. He’s been paid more than $1 billion since 2006. His precipitous fall began with the publication of a story written by Ronan Farrow for The New Yorker in July. Farrow has now reported that 12 women say the 68 year old Moonves forced himself upon them and in some cases retaliated professionally when they refused him.
One writer recalled Moonves telling her, “I could help you with your writing. I could help you, and if you do something nice for me I could do something nice for you.”
Moonves leaves without up to $120 million in exit pay, pending the results of a CBS investigation.
Some of the accusations are as much as 40 years old, going back to when Moonves worked at Lorimar television, but others involve his years at CBS, which started in 1995.
Moonves told The New Yorker, “The appalling accusations in this article are untrue,” but admitted to “consensual relations” with three of the women. Last night he issued a statement saying “untrue allegations from decades ago are now being made against me that are not consistent with who I am.”
It’s amazing how many women just make up stories about these poor guys.
Moonves was in a weakened position because he was involved in litigation against the primary CBS shareholder, Shari Redstone, for control of the company. The sexual allegations became his Achilles heel.
Moonves is married to Julie Chen, 48, who hosts both “Big Brother” and “The Talk” on CBS. He gave her both jobs.
Break Point:A day after she lost in the final of the US Open, tennis great Serena Williams was fined $17,000 for three code violations during her match on Saturday.
Umpire Carlos Ramos first issued Williams a warning when her coach gave her illegal hand signals. He then docked Williams a point when she smashed her racket in frustration after missing a shot. Then he defaulted Williams a full game after she called him a “thief,” saying that was verbal abuse. “You stole a point from me, and you are a thief,” Williams had told him.
Williams said she’s the target of sexist discrimination. She said male players have shouted obscenities at Ramos and not been penalized.
Crash Test: Ford Motors issued a statement refuting President Trump’s claim that a car they’ve been building in China can now be made in the US.
Ford had previously announced that it would not import the Focus Activebecause of Trump’s new tariffs. He tweeted yesterday, “This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!”
Ford said it can’t afford to build the car here either.
Police Beat: A Dallas police officer has been arrested and charged with manslaughter after she entered the wrong apartment in her building then shot and killed the black occupant. Off. Amber Guyger, who is white, told investigators that she thought Botham Jean, who was in his own home, was an intruder.
Exactly how she managed to enter the wrong apartment has not been explained. The 30-year-old Guyger, who was off duty at the time, also shot another man during an on-duty incident in 2017.
There She Is: New York’s Nia Imani Franklin was named Miss America last night. She said she was glad she didn’t have to appear in a bathing suit. “All these women onstage are more than just that.”
Miss Michigan won praise for speaking about the Flint water crisis. She said she’s “from the state with 84% of the US fresh water but none for its residents to drink”.
The Gathering Storm: The National Hurricane Center is now forecasting Florence to become a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall along the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic coast on Thursday.Residents are snapping up bottled water and plywood.
Florence was a Category 2 this morning. Heavy flooding is expected when it hits shore.
The Ideology of Stuff: After debuting its Colin Kaepernick “sacrifice” ad last week, Nike’s sales spiked by more than 30 percent, proving that the company isn’t selling ideas, it’s selling shoes.
