Police Beat: The judge in the trial of a Baltimore police officer accused in the death of Freddie Gray declared a mistrial yesterday after the jury said it was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Off. William Porter, 26, was charged with manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office.
Protesters hit the streets immediately, demanding justice, but mostly it was peaceful.
The mistrial is a body blow to the prosecution, which had hoped that a convicted Porter would be called to testify in the trials of two other cops involved with arresting and transporting Freddie Gray to his death in police custody last summer.
>The Ferguson, Mo. police department has reached the outline of an agreement about reforming its police department that would stave off a civil rights lawsuit claiming years of unconstitutional policing. Under the agreement a federal monitor would keep an eye on the department as it re-trains its cops and improves record keeping.
Econ 101: Stocks jumped yesterday after the Federal Reserve raised the basic interest rate by .25 percent. Investors say it’s a sign of confidence in the economy.
This is the first rate increase since the beginning of the financial crisis nine years ago. The increase may put a small damper on job growth, but mortgages and car loans will be at historically low rates for years to come.
The Pitch: Women’s soccer star Abby Wombach played her final game before retiring last night in New Orleans. The US lost to China 1-0.
Wombach, 35, has been the leader as the US women’s team grew to become a world power. She scored 184 goals during her career, won two Olympic gold medals, and the World Cup.
Bitter Pill: Martin Shkreli, the drug company entrepreneur who bought the rights to a life saving drug and jacked up the price from $13.50 a pill to $750, has been arrested on charges of securities fraud in Manhattan. The charges are related to a now-defunct hedge fund Shkreli used to run.
Shkreli is an investing wunderkind who dropped out of school and got into the money business at age 20. He shocked the country when he bought the rights to Daraprim, a medicine for a parasitic condition, and priced it in the stratosphere. He said he needed to maximize profits for his investors.
Affluenza: Ethan Couch, the rich kid who got probation after a 2013 drunk driving accident that killed four people and paralyzed a fifth, appears to have skipped and is missing.
Two years ago, when he was 16, Couch’s lawyers presented the unique defense that he suffered from “affluenza,” basically that he was a spoiled rich kid. It worked because he got 10 years probation instead of jail.
As part of his probation Couch is not allowed to drink. But he was recently featured in a home video showing him playing a rowdy game of beer pong. Authorities fear Couch may have left the country.
See No Evil: One of the little-known features in the national debate over gun control is that for 17 years congressional Republicans have blocked spending on research into gun violence. Although roughly 30 people a day are killed by guns, the Republicans don’t want anyone looking into what can be done about it. And this week, the giant spending bill moving through congress includes a rider that extends the ban.
