We’re back, but breaking in a new computer, so we’re going to be brief today.
20,000 LEAGUES: In a scenario out of a horror movie, a mini submarine with five people on board that went down for a visual tour of the Titanic, has lost contact with the surface and a massive search and rescue is under way.
The 22-foot Titan was about halfway into its 2 ½ hour trip on Sunday. It has only a few days of oxygen and it’s frightening to think of what it’s like inside that thing if everyone is still alive.
Even if the craft is located, rescue will be difficult. The Titan is in 13,000 feet of water and divers can go down only about 200. The Navy has ships that can retrieve objects at 20,000 feet, but they have to get to the scene and locate the sub before it’s too late.
The Titan is operated by OceanGate Expeditions, which has offered tours of the Titanic wreck since 2021 at $250,000 a seat.
Three of the five people in the craft have been identified so far. They are Hamish Harding, a British businessman and explorer, and the Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman. Harding has done other extreme deep water dives and has flown to space with Blue Origin. Mr. Dawood is from one of Pakistan’s wealthiest families.
THE SHOOTING GALLERY: At least 60 people were shot in the Chicago area during the long weekend as gun violence broke out across the country. Four people were found shot to death in a small Idaho town, a Pennsylvania state trooper was killed in an ambush, and bullets hit 11 teenagers, killing one, at a party in Missouri.
THE SPIN RACK: Four people died in a fire in an electric bicycle repair shop in New York’s Chinatown. E-bike fires are increasingly common. — Donald Trump now claims that the documents he referred to as “secret” in an audio recorded meeting that’s part of his indictment were really just newspaper clippings.
BELOW THE FOLD: A Portland, Oregon radio station is using an artificial intelligence DJ that goes by the name “AI Ashley.” It’s so real that it doesn’t sound any smarter than a normal DJ.
