Migrants to Austria, Innuendo and Conspiracy

The Great Migration: Thousands of migrants arrived in Austria today in buses provided by the Hungarian government after several hundred frustrated people set out to walk to get out of the country. About 4,000 migrants were told they were welcome in Austria or they were free to move on the Germany. More are on the way.

Hungary was blocking the transit of the migrants into other countries but ended up with an encampment around the Budapest train station. When several hundred migrants set out to walk without food and water, the government gave in and provided transportation. Some of the migrants were missing limbs lost in Syria’s civil war.

Church v. State: Two men were the first to walk out of the clerk’s office in Rowan County, Ky. with a license to get married after a standoff that put the county clerk in jail for contempt of court. James Yates and William Smith had previously been denied a license five times by County Clerk Kim Davis, who refused on religious grounds. Deputy clerk Brian Mason shook the two men’s hands and congratulated them. Eight licenses were issued, six of them to same-sex couples. Davis’s husband stood outside holding a sign that read, “Welcome to Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Econ: The Dow Jones dived 300 points yesterday on what should have been the happy news of a healthy increase in new jobs and the fall of the unemployment rate to 5.1 percent, the lowest since 2008 when the Great Recession kicked in. The economy added 173,000 … not great, but good. Even so, big investors are worried that the good news will cause the Federal reserve to raise interest rates.

Recon: An enormous ritual annual pillow fight at West Point that marks the end of summer training ended with 30 cadets injured, including 24 with concussions. The event is supposed to be harmless but some cadets loaded their pillowcases with hard objects, possibly even combat helmets. One cadet suffered a broken leg and others dislocated shoulders. One plebe posted on Twitter, “4 concussions, 1 broken leg, 2 broken arms, 1 dislocated shoulder, and several broken ribs. That’s one hell of a pillow fight. “#USMA19.”

Permawar: Russian moves to build a ground support base in Syria have the US worried that president Vladimir Putin is planning to expand military involvement in Syria’s civil war. Russia has moved portable housing and an air traffic control unit to the airfield outside Latakia, Syria’s primary port city. They may plan to ship in more military support for Syria, but if they bring in fighter jets they could ended up in direct confrontation with US planes bombing Islamic State targets in Syria.

The Sports Page: It feels like summer but college football starts today so it must be fall. Today’s big matchup: Number 3 ranked Alabama plays number 20 Wisconsin tonight in Arlington, Texas on the home turf of the Dallas Cowboys.

>In New York, Serena Williams survived an upset scare to survive for a shot at winning the Grand Slam of tennis. Williams dropped the first set 3-6 to Bethanie Mattek-Sands, but came powering back to finish the next two 7-5 and 6-0.

Hillary: The presidential candidate admitted on MSNBC that using a private email server while she was secretary of state “wasn’t the best choice.” Not quite apologizing, or explaining, Clinton said, “At the end of the day, I am sorry that this has been confusing to people and has raised a lot of questions, but there are answers to all these questions.”

More interesting, possibly, is what Clinton said about Republican candidate Donald Trump. She described his candidacy as “a bad development for our American political system.” She said, “Loose talk, threats, insults — they have consequences.” She went on to say Trump is “great at innuendo and conspiracy theories and really defaming people.”

Expect her to get tweet-smacked by Donald.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
