South of the Border: After just one week on the job, President Trump has created his first rift with a foreign leader. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto cancelled his trip to visit Trump next Tuesday because of the American president’s insistence on building a wall along the Mexican border and forcing Mexico to pay for it.
After more than a year of insults hurled at Mexico by Trump, Peña Nieto may have felt he had no choice. Trump tweeted yesterday morning, “If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.”
Peña Nieto did just that. Trump immediately spoke as if the US was the aggrieved party and he’s glad the meeting was cancelled. “Unless Mexico is going to treat the US fairly, with respect, such a meeting would be fruitless, and I want to go a different route. We have no choice.”
Press Secretary Sean Spicer announced that Trump plans to pay for the wall by imposing a 20 percent tax on all goods imported from Mexico, raising an estimated $10 billion a year. Hours later, the White House backed off and said that was just one of several ideas for financing the wall.
Philly Cheese Steak: The president spoke to Republican leaders at a strategy meeting in Philadelphia yesterday, telling them, “Now we have to deliver. Enough all talk, no action. We have to deliver. This is our chance to achieve great and lasting change for our beloved nation.”
Speaking, as he always does, in superlatives, Trump said, “This Congress is going to be the busiest Congress we’ve had in decades, maybe ever.”
Shakeup: Four top managers at the State Department resigned, some under pressure. If and when he is confirmed as Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, who has no diplomatic experience, won’t have the people who know how the place runs.
Stop the Presses: Trump’s aide Steve Bannon, the former boss at the right-wing Breitbart News, told a reporter for the NY Times that, “The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while.”
Bannon said the mainstream media had gotten it all wrong during the election and didn’t see Trump’s victory coming. “The media here is the opposition party,” Bannon said in a telephone interview. He said, “The media has zero integrity, zero intelligence, and no hard work.”
A sample of a headline Breitbart published under Bannon: “Hoist it High and Proud: The Confederate Flag Proclaims a Glorious Heritage.”
Crowd Control: The morning after his inauguration, President Trump summoned the director of the National Park Service to the phone to demand photographic evidence that the crowds were bigger than the press reported, The Washington Post reports. According to the story, Trump thought better photos would prove the press had lied. The National Park Service no longer issues official crowd estimates because it became too political.
Nation: The 44th annual March for Life takes place today, supported by a new pro-life White House administration. Organizers have been trying to motivate sympathizers to get a crowd bigger than last week’s Women’s March.
Social conservatives see an opportunity now to end federal funding to Planned Parenthood, and to reverse the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.
The Obit Page: Mike Connors, who played private detective Joe Mannix on the 1960s and 70s CBS’ series “Mannix” died yesterday at 91. He was diagnosed with leukemia only last week. Mannix actually had a telephone in his car. Like, yeah, sure, one day everyone would be able to make phone calls from their car.
Sister Against Sister: Venus and Serena Williams are set to play against each other tomorrow in the Australian Open. It’s the first time they will play against each other in a Grand Slam final since Wimbledon in 2009. If Serena wins, it will be a record 23rd Grand Slam singles title.
