Merkel Bugged, Red Sox Curse

Vol.2, No. 303
Bugged: The US has been eavesdropping on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s personal cell phone since 2002, according to an article in Der Spiegel. The publication says Merkel’s phone has been on an NSA bug list since before she became chancellor in 2005. Spying is a sore subject for Merkel because she grew up in Communist East Germany where neighbors spied on neighbors. Merkel said, “I’ve made it clear to the US president that spying on friends is not acceptable”.
Der Spiegel said the US has a listening station in its Berlin embassy and in about 80 cities around the world. In Washington yesterday, several hundred protesters marched against the NSA’s phone surveillance and carried banners in support of Edward Snowden, the computer contractor who opened Pandora’s box.
World: More than 50 people are dead and over 100 wounded in Baghdad today after ten car bombs targeted Shiite neighborhoods. Most off the bombs were placed near public markets and bus stations.
Game 3: The winning run never touched home plate in the bottom of the 9th as St. Louis beat Boston 5-4 in the third game of the World Series. It was a play that will be argued for years. St. Louis runner Allen Craig would have been called out but Boston 3rd baseman Will Middlebrooks, who had fallen to the ground reaching for an errant throw, was called for obstructing Craig as he left 3rd base. The Red Sox Curse? The Series is 2-1, St. Louis, with game 4 tonight at Busch Stadium.
Attention Shoppers: NY City’s “stop and frisk” policy has turned to “shop and frisk” when they buy pricey stuff, according to several black shoppers who say they were profiled and detained while at major department stores. Actor Rob Brown of HBO’s “Treme” said he was marched in handcuffs through the midtown Macy’s after buying a $1,350 watch for his mother with a credit card the cops wrongly said was fake. At Barney’s, a 19-year-old man was detained after buying a $349 belt, and a woman was surrounded by undercover security after paying $2,500 for a handbag. The Rev. Al Sharpton threatens a boycott.
Small Screen: ABC and Univision are set to unveil their joint venture Fusion network tomorrow, targeting under-30 Latinos. Fusion hopes to be the cable and online source of news, sports, commentary, and even comedy for a difficult-to-reach demographic of 2nd and 3rd generation English-speaking Latino Americans. The network touts itself as “Championing a smart, diverse and inclusive America.”
Pushy Women: Track stars Lolo Jones and Lauryn Williams may be headed to the Olympics again, but they’ll have to bring their thermals. Jones, a hurdler, and Williams, a sprinter who won Olympic gold, have been named to the US Bobsled Team. They are among six “pushers” who give the sled a quick start, but they’ll have to make the final three to get to the Sochi Olympics.
