Will Work for Change: In a New Hampshire town hall meeting last night Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton staked out their ground on which is the true “progressive” candidate. “I do not know any progressive who has a super pac and takes $15 million from Wall Street,” Sanders jabbed at Clinton.
And he said, “What this campaign is about is, not just electing a President, it is creating a political revolution where millions of people, many of whom have not been involved in the political process, stand up and demand a government which represents all of us, not just wealthy campaign contributors.”
Clinton near the top of her time on stage said, “ I said that I’m a progressive who likes to get things done. And I was somewhat amused today that Senator Sanders has set himself up to be the gatekeeper on who is the progressive because under the definition that was flying around on Twitter and statements by the campaign, Barack Obama would not be a progressive, Joe Biden would not be a progressive.”
The Great Game: Donald Trump is demanding a do-over, a recount, or some kind of second chance in the Iowa caucuses. Trump went on a twitter tirade, claiming that Ted Cruz committed fraud and stole the vote. Trump tweeted, “Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he stole it. That is why all of the polls were so wrong and why he got far more votes than anticipated. Bad!”
Cruz said, “He’s losing it. We’re liable to wake up one morning and Donald, if he were president, would have nuked Denmark.”
The Dwindling Crowd: Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul dropped out of the race yesterday with verbal bluster: “Brushfires of Liberty were ignited, and those will carry on, as will I.” Rick Santorum also dropped out, which won’t hurt his numbers in the polls.
Justice Files: Oddball millionaire Robert Durst, who has for many years been a suspect in several murders, pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a gun in New York City. Under the plea, he’ll get 85 months in federal prison. He is likely to be sent to a federal prison outside Los Angeles, where he is expected to be charged with the murder of his former assistant Susan Berman.
Durst was the subject of the HBO series, “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.” At the end of the last episode he can be heard muttering, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
The Boardroom: Ailing media mogul Sumner Redstone resigned as executive chairman of CBS, to be replaced by the company’s chief executive Les Moonves. Redstone controls 80 percent of CBS and Viacom, but has been the target of a lawsuit challenging his mental competence. Moonves, once an actor and now a celebrity among executives, has been president and chief executive of CBS since 2006.
The War Room: Top Army and Marines generals testified before a Senate Committee that women should have to register for the draft when they turn 18. It’s a reflection of the increasing participation of women in the military. Men have to register, but the US has not had an active military draft since Dec. 31, 1973.
The Obit Page: Bob Elliott, the “Bob” of the famous radio comedy team “Bob and Ray”, died at home in Maine at age 92. His partner, Ray Goulding, died almost 25 years ago.
Bob and Ray were the masters of a genre of humor Elliott called the “hilarity of pomposity.” They skewered with deadpan renditions of imaginary characters; a radio reporter, hapless salesmen, and advertising pitchmen, “Steel ingots cast with the housewife in mind.” They had a radio soap opera called “Mary Noble, Backstage Wife,” and once did a routine about a satellite that orbited one foot off the Earth. Elliott’s specialty was the street reporter Wally Ballou, who always came on the air in what’s known as an upcut … “lee Ballou, here.”
Their gentle humor endured into their later years. Elliott once said, “By the time we discovered we were introverts, it was too late to do anything about it.”
