Masked and Unmasked, Approaching 100,000

Who Was That Man: Presidential candidate Joe Biden made his first public appearance in months yesterday for Memorial Day wearing a mask and President Trump showed without one.

The President went to Arlington National Cemetery, where he compared healthcare workers fighting the coronavirus to the war dead. Biden and his wife Jill, both wearing black masks, laid a wreath at a veterans memorial in Delaware.

The President couldn’t go a day without anger or a threat. Yesterday he said he would pull the Republican National Convention out of North Carolina if the governor doesn’t loosen up his coronavirus rules and allow a fully crowded convention. Trump tweeted, “If not, we will be reluctantly forced to find, with all of the jobs and economic development it brings, another Republican National Convention site. This is not something I want to do.”

Trump is banking his re-election on re-opening the economy, even as the coronavirus rages on. Over the weekend he’s been all twitter thumbs, denouncing Joe Biden, whining about criticism of playing golf, and pushing to re-open the country’s schools: “Schools in our country should be opened ASAP. Much very good information now available.”

The Reviews Are In: This morning the US is close to 100,000 coronavirus deaths; 98,223. The death rate is slowing, but we’ll hit 100,000 in 24 or 48 hours.

The US is the hardest hit country in the world. But the President tweeted praise for his handling of the crisis saying, “Great reviews on our handling of Covid 19, sometimes referred to as the China Virus. Ventilators, Testing, Medical Supply Distribution, we made a lot of Governors look very good – And got no credit for so doing.”

Soooo, how is it that he got great reviews and no credit at the same time?

It’s What’s for Dinner: Meatpacking plants around the country have been coronavirus hotspots and the industry is struggling to get back to full production. More than 11,000 coronavirus cases have been tied to the giants Tyson Foods, Smithfield, and JBS. Tyson alone has had 7,000 cases.

Workers in packing plants tend to be shoulder to shoulder and the companies are struggling with distancing. Some analysts say the current shortages of meat in the groceries of as much as 35 percent could stretch on for a longer term.

Take a Pill: The World Health Organization is at least temporarily stopping its clinical trials of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 patients because of concerns that the drug may do more harm than good. Other studies of the drug President Trump has recommended and taken himself indicate that a Covid patient on hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine is more likely to die.

The Child Known As: We’re keeping it short this morning.

Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk and his baby mama, the singer Grimes, have changed the name of their infant son to comply with California law.

The name was “X Æ A-12” and now it’s “X Æ A-Xii.” The switch from digits to Roman numerals is what does it. Musk and Grimes have not issued a pronunciation guide, but most parents don’t admit from the outset that they plan to screw up their child.

The “Great” President

Monday, March 30, 2020

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
