Margaret Tatcher Dies, Fashion Faux Pas

Breaking: Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher died suddenly of a stroke today. She was 87. Sometimes known as the Iron Lady, she was a staunch conservative who led Britain for 11 years beginning in 1979. She’s credited with breaking the power of British unions and transforming the economy. In 1982 Thatcher sent a fleet to take back the Falkland Islands after Argentina invaded. She convinced President George H.W. Bush that the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait could not be tolerated, leading to the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

World: North Korea says it is withdrawing all 53,000 workers from its joint factory zone with the South Korea. It’s a move designed to put pressure on South Korea to negotiate but President Park Geun-hye says that will not happen.

  • Eleven children were among 20 people killed in a NATO air strike in eastern Afghanistan. An American civilian also died during the battle between Taliban and US supported Afghan troops. Coalition forces were pinned down by gunfire from a house and called in the air strike that killed women and children along with Taliban gunmen.

At The Box: Recycling is in. A re-make of the grind house horror “Evil Dead” earned $27 million to top the weekend. The only other major release was a 3-D version of “Jurassic Park”, coming in at $18 million.

Passing: Palm Beach fashion designer designer Lilly Pulitzer, whose brightly colored dresses and tennis outfits put the prep in preppy, died at age 81. Her business took off when her friend Jackie Kennedy was photographed wearing a Pulitzer dress made of kitchen curtain material.

Medium Rare: Red meat contributes to heart disease, but not for the reason many think, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Medicine. The fat in meat is not the problem. It’s the process by which the human body breaks down the chemical carnitine in the meat that leads to buildup of fat in our blood vessels.

Fashion Slip: Target apologized for naming the color of a plus-sized dress “manatee gray” while the regular sizes were called “dark heather gray”. A manatee is sometimes known as a sea cow and can weigh up to 3500 pounds. Target took the dresses off the racks.

Court in Session: The Louisville Cardinals meet Michigan tonight to play for the NCAA basketball championship. Game time, 6:23 EDT.
