Manning Sentenced: Army Pfc. Bradley Manning was sentenced this morning to 35 years in prison for giving 750,000 secret documents to the website Wikileaks. Manning, 25, revealed during the trial that he is transgender and wants to become a woman.
In Cold Blood: International outrage is growing over the murder last week of an Australian College baseball player randomly gunned down while he was jogging in Duncan, Oklahoma. Three boys 15,16,and 17 are accused of shooting Christopher Lane, 23, for a thrill. Lane was going to be a senior at East Central University in Ada, Okla. One Australian official has called for a tourism boycott of the US to protest American gun laws.
World: The ruined Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan recently has leaked 300 tons of contaminated water, according to Tokyo Electric Power. The water has seeped into soil around the plant and could flow into the Pacific. Heavy rains are expected and workers are piling sandbags, but they don’t know the source of the leak.
National: The National Security Agency has the ability to snoop on 75% of all American Internet activity, the Wall Street Journal reports today. That’s a greater intelligence capability than previously reported.
- The final lot of Oval Office tape recordings from the Nixon administration is scheduled to be released today. The tapes cover the months when the Watergate noose was tightening on the President.
Like: Facebook makes you unhappy, according to a University of Michigan study of college-aged adults. The study found that extended use of Facebook lowers moment-to-moment happiness and general satisfaction with life. Some of you are reading this news on Facebook.
Birther: Florida Sen. Ted Cruz, a Tea Party favorite who flirts with running for President, was born in Calgary, Canada, he confirmed. This does not disqualify him from becoming President because his mother was born in the US. Cruz said he will renounce Canadian citizenship, but this puts him in an awkward position with “birther” supporters who believe President Obama was not born in the US. Obama’s birth certificate says he was born in the US and it turns out that Cruz’s proves that he was not.
The Obit Page: Charles Pollock, inventor of the Pollock Executive Chair, one of the most ubiquitous pieces of office furniture, died in a fire in his Queens, NY home at age 83. Since 1963 the curvy $1,500 chair with tufted upholstery has provided posterior comfort for hundreds of thousands of business execs as they do the hiring and firing.
