Survivor: The talk of the nation is 7-year-old Sailor Gutzler, who survived a plane crash Friday night in western Kentucky and walked out of the chilly woods in shorts and bare feet. The two-engine Piper aircraft piloted by her father had crashed upside down. Her parents, 9-year-old sister, and 14-year-old cousin were killed. Sailor walked ¾ of a mile in dark woods before finding a house and knocking on the door. A picture of Sailor has circulated in which she is wearing a t-shirt that says, “You can’t stop me.”
New York’s Finest: Hundreds of uniformed police officers turned their backs again yesterday as New York Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at the funeral of murdered police officer Wenjian Liu. Inside the funeral home the mayor said, “Let us move forward by strengthening the bonds that unite us, and let us work together to attain peace,” while outside thousands of officers demonstrated their disrespect for the mayor. One retired officer held a sign that said, “God Bless the NYPD. Dump de Blasio.”The cops believe the mayor contributed to an anti-police atmosphere that led to the ambush killing of Liu and his partner Dec. 20th.
Get Ready: A winter storm that formed over the northwest is moving in over a 2,000 mile front, bringing snow and freezing temperatures from Washington to Iowa. Temperatures by tonight are expected to be in the single digits in the upper Midwest and in the teens from Chicago to Detroit and Buffalo. Wind chills could run from 25 to 45 degrees below zero.
Nation: Thomas Gilbert Sr., the founder of the $200 million hedge fund Wainscott Capital Partners, was found shot to death in his apartment in the tony Beekman Place on Manhattan’s east side. Gilbert’s son Tommy, 30, was taken into custody for questioning by the police.
>Jury selection begins today in the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the Boston Marathon bombing. Tsarnaev was indicted on 30 counts, including 17 that could bring him the death penalty or life in prison. His lawyers plan to argue that he was under the influence of his older brother Tamarlan.
World: Libyan jets bombed a Greek oil tanker in the Libyan port of Derna after the ship operated “suspiciously” according to the government. Two crewmembers were killed. Derna has been held by rebels for two years. The military said the tanker wouldn’t stop for an inspection then turned off its lights and entered a military zone.
The Obit Page: Ulrich Beck, the German sociologist who warned that technology creates a riskier society, has died at age 70. He wrote in his book Risk Society that improved technology raises the risk of environmental disaster, economic collapse, even terrorism.
The Sports Page. It’s down to the final eight for the National Football League. Next week’s matchups: -New England v. Baltimore -Denver v. Indianapolis -Seattle v. Carolina -Green Bay v. Dallas
If You Build It: The owner of the St. Louis Rams says he plans to build a new football stadium in Inglewood, Calif., on the border of Los Angeles. He plans an 80,000-seat stadium and a 6,000-seat performance venue. Of course, Los Angeles doesn’t have an NFL team to put in the stadium and hasn’t since 1979. But that’s just a messy detail.
