ISIS Murders Again, Jobs Move Up

In the Name of Allah: The world is shocked again afterISIS militants released another video, this one showing the beheading of British aid worker Alan Henning. He is the fourth Western hostage to be executed in recent weeks. Henning, 47, was a taxi driver from the Manchester, England area who had been taken prisoner in Syria nine months ago while working with Muslim friends on an aid convoy. ISIS claims Henning’s murder was in retaliation for British participation in air strikes against the Muslim terrorist army. The end of the video shows American hostage Peter Kassig and says he’s next. So far ISIS has kept its word on these promises.

Econ 101: The unemployment rate dropped to 5.9 percent by the end of September, the lowest since the summer of 2008 as the country slid into a near-depression, according to the Labor Department. Employers hired 248,000 people in September, more than economists had predicted. The stock market jumped. But the economic recovery is still considered to be slow, dragged by low growth in wages and a high number of people working part time who need full time work. But despite improving numbers, and one of the longest stretches of job growth in US history, President Obama continues to suffer with a public impression that the economy is not improving.

GitMo: Against the pleas of the Obama administration, which said such a move would endanger national security, a federal judge has ordered the public release of 28 videos showing prisoners forcibly extracted from their cells at Guantanamo Bay and force-fed. The judge said some of the government’s reasons for keeping the tapes secret were “just plain implausible.”

Hong Kong: Police have arrested 19 people, some of them believed to be members of triad gangs, and accused them of attacking pro-Democracy demonstrators yesterday. The violence led to the postponement of talks between the protesters and the Hong Kong government. The demonstrators are fighting Beijing’s plan to approve candidates running for Hong Kong chief executive.

Diplomacy: Sweden’s newPrime Minister Stefan Lofven during his inaugural address said that his country would recognize Palestine, making it the first major European nation to do so. Lofven said, “A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and a will to peaceful coexistence. Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palestine.” The US does not recognize Palestine.

Ivy League: Hundreds of Harvard students and staff yesterday received an email from an anonymous person threatening to come to the campus and shoot them. The school security went on higher alert and the incident has been turned over to the FBI.

The Obit Page: Raymond DeVoe Jr., who wrote a financial newsletter called the DeVoe Report for 35 years has died at age 85. You may never have heard of him but DeVoe coined a catchy phrase to describe the moment when a steadily dropping stock has a brief revival. He called it “the dead cat bounce.”

Events Pre-Recorded: Norway has dropped out of the running to host the 2022 Winter Olympics because the country can’t afford it. That leaves the winter wonderlands of Beijing, China, and Almaty, Kazakhstan as the only potential locations. Some observers have noted that since Russia hosted the winter games in Sochi and Qatar will have the 2022 World Cup, only totalitarian countries will be hosting world sports events. It doesn’t matter to NBC Sports, which will be there to tell you all the athletes overcame crippling childhood diseases and dyslexia.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
