The Killers: The fundamentalist Muslim army known as ISIS can’t be beaten unless it is hit within the boundaries of Syria, America’s top military officer said yesterday. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said, “This is an organization that has an apocalyptic end-of-days strategic vision that will eventually have to be defeated.” But he said, “Can they be defeated without addressing that part of the organization that resides in Syria? The answer is no.”
Appearing with Gen. Martin at a Pentagon press conference, Secy. Of Defense Chuck Hagel was asked whether the US would actually strike ISIS in Syria. He said, “We’re looking at all options.” He later said, “They are an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether it’s in Iraq or anywhere else.”
Gaza: Hamas has killed 11 people suspected of being informers for the Israelis. A Gaza security official said the 11 were killed by firing squad inside the Hamas police headquarters. The executions appear to be linked to the pinpoint Israeli attacks on Hamas leaders. Some of the information on exact locations may have come from informers.
Ukraine: Russia has sent an aid convoy of 34 trucks into Ukraine, apparently without Ukrainian permission. The trucks were being held at the border for customs inspection. A statement on the Russian foreign ministry website said, “The Russian side has decided to act. Our column with humanitarian aid is starting to move in the direction of Luhansk.”
Nation: The National Guard is withdrawing from Ferguson, Mo. on orders of Gov. Jay Nixon, who says peace has largely been restored. The city now waits for word from a Grand Jury investigation into the shooting of black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer.
>In an effort to curb prescription drug abuse, the Obama administration is moving to restrict the most common narcotic painkillers such as Vicodin. The new rule will put a 90-day limit on prescriptions for the hydrocodone class of painkillers.
Out of Town by Deadline: Afghanistan kicked out NY Times reporter Matthew Rosenberg, denouncing his recent article on the country’s election impasse as something close to spying. A statement issued by the
Government Media and Information Center says it “considers Mr. Rosenberg’s report more of an espionage act than a journalistic work, one that was meant to create panic and disruption in people’s minds, and provide the basis for other spying purposes.”
With the results of Afghanistan’s presidential election in dispute, Rosenberg reported that a group of powerful officials was considering taking over, effectively conducting a coup.
Rosenberg is the first western reporter ejected from Afghanistan since the defeat of the Talban. He was escorted through the Kabul airport by border police and the chief prosecutor.
Three Strikes: Philadelphia pitching phenom Mo’Ne Davis has been eliminated from the Little League World Series with her team’s loss last night to the Jackie Robinson West Little League club from Chicago. Maybe it’s because they put her on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Dating IQ: A contestant on the television show “Dating Naked” is suing the producers because they failed as promised to blur her private parts in one particular scene. When the show aired Jessie Nizewitz, 28, was deluged with messages, including one tweet that said, “So your money shot is on cable TV.” Nizewitz is suing for $10 million. So, just to recap here, Nizewitz agreed to go naked with a man she had never met in front of cameras for national television. The show is called “Dating Naked.” And when she was actually shown naked, she sued. And did we say? …. the show is called “Dating Naked.”
