Borderline Personality:President Trump invited leaders of both parties to meet at the White House today for a briefing on border security. Our guess is that Homeland Security briefers will tell them the migrant “crisis” is equivalent to Germany taking the Sudetenland and Trump desperately needs a $25 billion border wall.
“Border Security and the Wall ‘thing’ and Shutdown is not where Nancy Pelosi wanted to start her tenure as Speaker! Let’s make a deal?” Trump tweeted Tuesday.
He has an odd way of inviting guests to a party. He also tweeted, “One thing has now been proven. The Democrats do not care about Open Borders and all of the crime and drugs that Open Borders bring!” But come over for some wine and cheese.
The Democrats say they are going to stick to an offer of $1.3 billion for border security and not a penny to build a wall.
There’s definitely a problem at the border, but with the administration baldly lying about the size of it, there’s no way of knowing what’s true. Overnight Tuesday, border officers fired teargas into Mexico to push back 150 migrants trying to breach the fence near San Diego and Tijuana.
Although women and children were among the crowd trying to cross the border, the Border Patrol said only rock-throwers were affected by the tear gas. It’s hard to believe they would know.
TDR:Newly-elected to the Senate from Utah, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney slams President Trump in an opinion piece published in The Washington Post.“A president should demonstrate the essential qualities of honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with comity and mutual respect,” Romney says. He goes on, “And it is in this province where the incumbent’s shortfall has been most glaring.”
Romney may be trying to establish himself as the leader of the Republican resistance to Trump even before he takes the oath.
This hit the web the same day Trump tweeted “HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE HATERS AND THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA! 2019 WILL BE A FANTASTIC YEAR FOR THOSE NOT SUFFERING FROM TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME. JUST CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE, GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR OUR COUNTRY!”
Who needs Mitt Romney when the President makes the point himself.?
Square One:In a New Year’s Day speech, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said he’s not giving up his nuclear weapons as President Trump had claimed he would after their meeting last year.
Kim said that unless international economic sanctions are lifted, he will return to building nuclear bombs. Kim has previously flirted with giving up nukes and reversed himself. Trump was warned he was likely to do this.
Kim was not completely clear about what he wants, but he talked about military exercises in South Korea with “other foreign sources”and the US making concessions. Kim said, “If the United States can show corresponding measures, the relationship between the two countries will, through many processes, accelerate for the better. But if the counterpart continues with its past habits, it won’t be good, but I hope they stop this.”
No Joke:At the demand of Saudi Arabian authorities, Netflix has withdrawn an episode of the show “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj” because the comedian makes fun of the Saudi cover story for the murder of dissident Jamal Khashoggi.
Minhajsays, “This is the most unbelievable cover story since Blake Shelton won sexiest man alive.”
It isn’t the funniest joke, but the Saudi government saw no humor in it at all. The Saudis cited a national law that prohibits the “production, preparation, transmission, or storage of material impinging on public order, religious values, public morals, and privacy, through the information network or computers.”
In other words, when the Saudi government commits murder, you can’t say anything about it. Netflix said it was complying with local law withdrawing the show.
Football Overdose:In pre-game festivities, Texas’s mascot, the longhorn steer Bevo, broke out of his pen and chased away Georgia’s bulldog Uga.
Urban Meyer coached his last game with Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. The scores:
Sugar Bowl: Texas 28, Georgia 21
Rose: Ohio State 28, Washington 24
Fiesta: LSU 40, UCF 32
Citrus: Kentucky 27, Penn State 24
Outback: Iowa 27, Mississippi State 22
Mohammed Sixpack:The predominantly Muslim country of Qatar is trying to cut down on the consumption of alcohol by imposing a 100 percent tax. It applies only to foreigners living in Qatar who have valid permits to buy alcohol. The new price of a sixpack of beer is about $26. And that’s just for Bud.
