Immigrants behind Bars, The Conways

Indefinite Detention:Handing President Trump a win on his get-tough immigration policies, The Supreme Court ruled that the government has the authority to indefinitely detain illegal immigrants who’ve spent time in prison for criminal convictions even if it’s years after their release.

The court ruled 5-4 along ideological lines, with the conservatives in the majority.

Federal law says the government can detain convicted immigrants “when the alien is released” from criminal detention. Civil rights lawyers argued that the law applies literally only immediately after immigrants are released. The Trump administration said the government should have the power to detain such immigrants anytime, even if they’ve been out of prison for years.

Trumped Up:Carrying on his vendetta against the late Arizona Sen. John McCain, President Trump told reporters yesterday, “I was never a fan of John McCain, and I never will be.”

This followed Trump’s weekend tweet trashing McCain for being “last in his class” at Annapolis. Close, but he wasn’t.

As a Navy pilot McCain spent years in a North Vietnamese POW camp. Trump said during his 2016 campaign that he likes people who weren’t captured.

What seems to grind on Trump is that McCain is considered a national hero, and he’s not. That, and McCain voted no on repealing Obamacare, a big Republican promise that flopped. “He campaigned on repealing and replacing Obamacare for years and then it got to a vote and he said thumbs down,” Trump said, claiming without evidence that the repeal would have “saved a trillion dollars.”

When something gets under Trump’s skin, it stays there. He’s probably never going to like reporters any more than John McCain. Keeping up his refrain, he tweeted yesterday, “The Fake News Media has NEVER been more Dishonest or Corrupt than it is right now.” He said,  “Fake News is the absolute Enemy of the People and our Country itself!”

He’s annoyed about lack of praise for his generosity. “While the press doesn’t like writing about it, nor do I need them to, I donate my yearly Presidential salary of $400,000.00 to different agencies throughout the year.”

It’s true, he donates his salary. It’s also true that one weekend trip to play golf in Florida costs the US government $3.4 million.

Relief:The FDA has approved the first drug for postpartum depression, the crippling malady that strikes some women after they have a baby.

It’s not your usual anti-depression drug. It is delivered by infusion over 60 hours, during which the mother must be in a certified medical center for observation. And here’s the part that could leave those who need it in a funk; the treatment costs about $38,000.

Double Secret Probation:The University of Southern California announced that it is rejecting the applications of six kids associated with the college admissions scandal and is investigating some currently-enrolled students to learn whether their applications were falsified. They were told they cannot register for classes until their record is verified.

Thirty-three rich parents have been charged with forging, faking, and paying their kids’ way into college. The universities are grappling with what to do about the ones who slipped in, some of whom don’t know what their parents did. Yale and Stanford have also warned students that if they faked their application they could be “disenrolled,” which is eduspeak for kicked out.

Water, Water, Everywhere: Devastating floods continue in the Midwest. Fifteen states are under flood watch and 84 cities have declared emergencies. Thousands of  acres of farmland are under water. Livestock has drowned and the fields might not dry out in time for spring planting.

In Mozambique, rescuers are still trying to reach people cut off in flooding left by Cyclone Idai. People have been spotted taking refuge on rooftops and in trees.

Courtside:Fairleigh Dickinson University last night won its first ever NCAA tournament game. Senior guard Darnell Edge scored a career-high 33 points beating Prairie View A&M 82-76.

FDU coach  Greg Herenda, in his sixth season at the Hackensack, New Jersey, danced on the court and hugged his players after the win. He later said, “When you coach for 35 years and you take a team to an NCAA Tournament and a team that, when I got here six years ago, we had nothing. And to build it, and then it’s here, and it’s so sad that every coach can’t experience this.”

The Conways of Washington:Maybe somewhere in the drama of George and Kellyanne Conway there’s material for a sitcom, an HBO serial drama, or a Washington murder mystery in which the killing hasn’t happened yet.

After George Conway announced that he believes President Trump is mentally ill and deteriorating, Trump tweeted that Conway is  “A total loser!” George’s wife Kellyanne, who is one of the President’s most loyal defenders, has yet to announce that she’s resigning in protest, or even that her husband is not  a loser.

George Conway told The Washington Posthe tweets out his frustrations about Trump so he doesn’t end up screaming at his wife. “The mendacity, the incompetence, it’s just maddening to watch. The tweeting is just the way to get it out of the way, so I can get it off my chest and move on with my life that day. That’s basically it.”

Maybe Kellyanne will defend her husband in episode two.

The “Great” President

Monday, March 30, 2020

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
