Illinois in Rubble, Zimmerman Again

National: As many as 500 homes in Washington, Ill. east of Peoria, were damaged and destroyed by Sunday’s tornado.  A 200-unit apartment building was ripped apart. The twister was classified an EF-4 with winds up to 190 mph.

  • A record 55% of Americans disapprove of the way President Obama is doing his job, according to recent polls. His approval rating has fallen to 42%.

World: At least 22 people are dead this morning in twin suicide bombings outside the Iranian embassy in Beirut. It’s an area controlled by Hezbollah and an opposition group claims responsibility.

  • An estimated 4 million Filipinos are still displaced by Typhoon Haiyan and more than half are not getting enough food and water. Aid is not reaching rural areas in the quantities necessary. Evacuation centers lack proper sanitation and supplies for thousands of people.

Crime Beat: George Zimmerman was arrested in Florida yesterday after his girlfriend told police he broke a glass table and pointed a shotgun at her. The girlfriend said Zimmerman also kept an AR-15 rifle and two handguns in her home. Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, was held without bail on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a weapon. He also had a domestic disturbance incident with his estranged wife in September.

The Deep: A free diver from Brooklyn died in the Bahamas trying to set a record of 236 feet on a single breath with no fins. Nicholas Mevoli, 32, was competing in Vertical Blue, the championship of the increasingly popular sport. He returned to the surface alive after 3 minutes 38 seconds, but lost consciousness and appeared to have a ruptured lung. Doctors in a support boat were unable to revive him. Mevoli was a relative newcomer to the sport, but in May he became the first American to dive to 328 feet using a monofin.

Money, It’s a Gas: CNBC financial anchor Maria Bartiromo, known as “The Money Honey”, is leaving the network after 20 years and joining the Fox Business Network. It’s causing a big stir in the television business, but we’re not sure it matters any more than whether the Dow was up or down in the last 5 minutes, which is basically what she reports about.

Oh, Canada: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said last night, “I’ve had a come-to-Jesus moment,” and he’s given up alcohol. This, at the end of a turbulent day in which his city council voted overwhelmingly to cut his budget by 60% and strip the crack-smoking mayor of most of his power. “It’s a coup d’état, that’s all this is,” Ford said. About the only power Ford has left is to appear at official functions as the mayor.

Mare Mah-dee: The Boston Globe notes that mayor-elect Marty Walsh has the thickest Boston accent in recent city-hall history. While Ray Flynn and Tom Menino considered themselves May-uh of the city, Walsh will be “Mare of Bawstin.” It’s more of a working class dialect, not the upper class “Hahvad Yahd” of President Kennedy. Walsh, who is originally from “Dohchestah,” (Dorchester), becomes Mare of Bawstin in January and expects there’s going to be a lot of hahd werk to be done for the city.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
