Hungary Closes Border, Huma Testifies
Saturday, October 17, 2015
The Great Migration: Hungary has closed its border with Croatia to block the flow of migrants passing through on the way to Western Europe. The overwhelmed Hungary already closed its border with Serbia and is telling migrants to go through Slovenia instead. As a result, Slovenia shut down passenger rail transit from Croatia.
Politics: Hillary Clinton’s right-hand woman Huma Abedin was questioned yesterday in a closed-door meeting of the House committee investigating the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi in which four Americans died. Abedin said she answered all questions.
The ranking Democrat on the committee run by Republicans was angry that Abedin had been summoned, saying she “had no policy responsibilities, no operational responsibilities and was not with Secretary Clinton on the night of this phenomenal tragedy.” Two Republican members of Congress have said that the Benghazi committee is focused on damaging Clinton’s quest for the presidency.
Permawar: The origin of a drone that crossed the border from Syria and was shot down by a Turkish fighter plane has not been identified. The Russians deny it was theirs, but the US is suggesting it was. The drone appears to be the first aircraft shot down by another aircraft in the increasingly crowded skies of the Middle East’s hot zone. Turkey said the drone violated its airspace and they took a fair shot.
Fantasy: Legal authorities from the federal government to the states are finally asking “what the hell is going on here?” as they wake up to the multi-million dollar websites like FanDuel and DraftKings that have taken fantasy sports out of the office and put them on the Internet.
Fantasy players build rosters of real players and win money based on their actual performance. Ever see that television ad in which the guy says he won $2 million? The feds and the states are beginning to wonder whether this is illegal gambling right out in the open. The Illinois Gaming Board claimed yesterday that fantasy sports sites are illegal and Nevada regulators say fantasy sports are gambling, not a game of skill.
Hoop Dreams: Former NBA star Lamar Odom is reported to have regained consciousness three days after a drug-fueled weekend left him unconscious in a Nevada Brothel. His estranged wife Khloe Kardashian, had been making medical decisions on his behalf because all of life is really just a reality television show.
Small Screen: The CBS television network is refusing to run ads for the movie Truth about former anchor Dan Rather and one of the most turbulent incidents in the history of CBS News. Rather and his producer Mary Mapes produced a story only weeks before the 2004 election about how President George W. Bush got out of going to Vietnam by serving in the Texas Air National Guard.
The story was retracted because its documentation was questionable. Mapes was fired and Rather was slowly drummed out of CBS.
Explaining the network’s decision, longtime spokesman Gil Schwartz said, “It’s astounding how little truth there is in Truth.” He said, “The film tries to turn gross errors of journalism and judgment into acts of heroism and martyrdom.”
Big Game: Recalling the controversy over the killing of Cecil the Lion, an unidentified German hunter has killed the largest African elephant seen in Zimbabwe for the past 30 years. He paid $60,000 for the privilege. The bull elephant, with tusks at least six feet long, was estimated to have been 40 to 60 years old. About a half dozen big elephants known as “tuskers” have been killed in the past year.
Twitwits: Some of the latest Twitter action from two men who want to lead America’s diplomacy with the world:
Jeb Bush: “How pathetic for @realdonaldtrump to criticize the president for 9/11. We were attacked & my brother kept us safe.”
Donald Trump: “No @JebBush, you’re pathetic for saying nothing happened during your brother’s term when the World Trade Center was attacked and came down.”
What would @AbrahamLincoln say if he were alive today?
