Housecleaning and the Big House

Today in Trumpworld:A housecleaning at Homeland Security; blocked in court; a terrorist designation. It’s only Tuesday.

After pushing out Homeland Security Secretary Kierstjen Nielsen, President Trump appears to be wiping out the top ranks of the department in his campaign to crack down on illegal immigration, migrants seeking asylum, and overall security. At least five people are out.

Much of this seems to be coming at the direction of presidential adviser Stephen Miller, who’s pushing a hard line against immigrants and Trump is taking it.

Trump also forced out Randolph Alles, the director of the Secret Service, who had fallen out of favor with the President even before a Chinese woman with suspect motives talked her way into Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. Trump has made fun of Alles’s unusually large ears, calling him “Dumbo,” but why Alles was fired is a question.

Also on the immigration beat, a federal judge in Northern California blocked Trump’s order that immigrants seeking asylum must stay in Mexico while their cases are decided. The law says they must be admitted. The judge said Homeland Security may not return migrants to countries where  their “life or freedom would be threatened.”

And in international relations, President Trump announced the designation of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.

The Guard is more than just a military unit. It has carried out covert operations out of the country and is involved with businesses at home. Trump said, “This action will significantly expand the scope and scale of our maximum pressure on the Iranian regime,” but Iran is not likely to simply accept it.

Orange is the New Black:Actress Felicity Huffman as well as 12 other parents and a coach will plead guilty to bribing and faking their kids’ way into college, federal prosecutors in Boston say.

The feds say they will ask for jail time for all the defendants.

Huffman is accused of paying college adviser William Singer $15,000 to cheat on her older daughter’s SAT. Fifty people were indicted in the scam.

“My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her,” Huffman said in a statement. “This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life.”

The other high-profile defendant is actress Lori Loughlin, who with her husband the designer Mossimo Giannullipaid half a million dollars to get their daughters admitted to USC as members of the crew team. They never rowed a stroke.

Loughlin’s daughters left USC. Yale kicked out one student and Stanford ejected a student admitted to be on the sailing team.

Permawar:Three American soldiers and a civilian contractor were killed yesterday by a car bomb that hit their convoy in Afghanistan.  A car pulled over as if to let the American convoy pass near Bagram Air Base and then detonated.

The Taliban is stepping up its attacks in which seven American service members have been killed so far this year.

Bibi on the Brink:Israelis go to the polls today for an election in which longtime Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu is on the ropes. He’s been trailing in the polls.

Both President Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin have endorsed Netanyahu. That’s a scary thing. In a bid to win votes, Netanyahu has declared that he will annex the occupied Golan Heights, home to 2.6 million Palestinians, taken from Syria in 1967. It would be a violation of international law and Netanyahu has made the election a referendum on whether to ever allow the Palestinian to have their own country.

Hoop Dreams:Overtime was a letdown. Virginia ran away with the NCAA men’s basketball championship 85-77 over Texas Tech in the two and half minute third period.

Regular time came down to spilt seconds. Trailing by one point,  Virginia fouled Texas Tech with 22 seconds on the clock and Tech hit both shots to make it 68-65. Virginia replied with a three-pointer to tie it up and send the game into overtime

The Gathering Crowd:Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California announced that he’s the 18^thDemocratic candidate for president. Okay, he didn’t say he’s running as the 18th^thcandidate, but he is. Quick, name the other 17. Okay, just three of them.

Swalwell told “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert that he believes the United States is in “quicksand” where Americans feel they are “running in place and it is not adding up to anything.”

Since when do politicians announce they are running on a comedy show?

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
