Atlas Shrugged: Greeks celebrated in the streets last night after a reported 61 percent of voters said “no” to a European economic bailout that would have imposed more taxes, spending cuts, and pension reductions. Many said that it was a matter of national dignity after years of living under austerity imposed by European financiers.
Greece now faces the possibility of financial collapse, exit from the euro zone, and even expulsion from the European Union.
But the NY Times’ Paul Krugman says the Greeks did the right thing telling European creditors to stuff it, comparing them to “medieval doctors who insisted on bleeding their patients — and when their treatment made the patients sicker, demanded even more bleeding.”
The European Central Bank, which has an emergency meeting today, may determine what happens next. In a conciliatory move, Greece’s militant finance minister Yanis Varoufakis resigned, suggesting that the prime minister might install a more reasonable negotiating team.
With Greek banks closed by government decree, the ECB has injected enough cash to keep a minimal amount of money flowing through the Greek economy. If the ECB stops, a Greek collapse would be imminent.
USA, USA: The Americans scored their fourth goal from the midfield line just 16 minutes into the game in Vancouver last night, in what became a crushing 5-2 win over Japan for the Women’s World Cup. It is the American women’s first World Cup win since 1999.
Midfielder Carli Lloyd scored three of the first four goals. The US scored at three minutes, five minutes, and 14 minutes before Lloyd saw from the center of the field that the Japanese goalie was too far forward and lobbed the humiliating fourth goal over her head. The Japanese recovered to score twice, but the game was determined in the opening minutes.
The Sports Page: The world’s #1 golfer Rory McIlroy suffered a total rupture of a ligament in his left ankle while kicking around a soccer ball with friends. It’s unknown when he’ll play again. The 26-year-old Irish golfer is the youngest to win the US Open since Tiger Woods.

Investigators said Devon Staples was using a reloadable mortar tube. It’s Maine’s first fireworks death since making them legal two years ago. Staples’ brother Cody, who was there, told a reporter, “Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid. He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh.”
The Obit Page: Burt Shavitz, the “Burt” of Burt’s Bees natural cosmetics died of respiratory disease at age 80 in Maine. He was selling honey for a living in Maine when he met Roxanne Quimby who made products out of Beeswax. They formed the successful company but eventually parted ways. Although Burt and his bushy beard were on the company logo, he ended up living a quiet life in Maine.
