Golden State Killer Arrest, Cohen Takes 5th

Cold Case: DNA evidence, which did not exist at the time of a notorious string of California rapes and murders in the 1970s and 80s, has led to the arrest of a former police officer known all these years only as the Golden State Killer.

Police arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Sacramento. They said they were able to match DeAngelo’s DNA with the evidence from the murders of  Lyman and Charlene Smith in Ventura County in 1980.

Twelve murders and more than 50 rapes took place between 1978 and 1986. The serial rapist and killer at first preyed upon women home alone and women at home with their children. He went on to rape women with their husbands present before murdering both of them.

Some women said he wore gloves and a mask and spoke in a gravelly whisper. Some said he stopped for a snack after he raped them.

The Fifth: President Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen has indicated that he intends to invoke his 5th Amendment privilege against self-incrimination and refuse to answer deposition questions in the Stormy Daniels suit against the President.

In a court filing in California where the Daniels case is being heard, Cohen said, “I will assert my 5th Amendment rights in connection with all proceedings in this case due to the ongoing criminal investigation by the F.B.I. and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.” In short, he doesn’t want anything he reveals in the civil lawsuit to be used against him in the criminal case. He has the right to do that, but it doesn’t make him look good.

Cohen’s filing also says his defense team has set up a “war room” to vet the records and materials seized from him in FBI raids. His goal is to be able to assert attorney-client privilege and deny prosecutors the use of what they found.

The Supremes: Questions by Supreme Court justices in a hearing about President Trump’s travel ban suggested that a majority believe the ban on travelers from seven countries, five of them predominantly Muslim, is constitutional.

Justice Samuel Alito said,  “I think there are 50 predominantly Muslim countries in the world. Five — five countries — five predominantly Muslim countries are on this list. The population of the — of the predominantly Muslim countries on this list make up about 8 percent of the world’s Muslim population.”

The Trump administration claims the ban is for national security and Justice Anthony Kennedy questioned whether it’s the job of the courts to second-guess matter of national security.

The more liberal Elena Kagan drew a parallel to anti-Semitism. “So let’s say in some future time a — a president gets elected who is a vehement anti-Semite and says all kinds of denigrating comments about Jews and provokes a lot of resentment and hatred over the course of a campaign and … what emerges — and, again, in the context of this virulent anti-Semitism — what emerges is a proclamation that says no one shall enter from Israel.”

Advise & Consent: Prospects are looking worse for Dr. Ronny Jackson, the White House physician President rump nominated to the Veterans’ Affairs Department. Democrats on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee released a document saying Jackson liberally handed out the prescription painkiller Percocet, even to himself, and once wrecked a government car while he was drunk.

A NY Times editorial says, “At this point you have to ask: Just what do job postings for the Trump administration look like? Surely they must stipulate that relevant experience isn’t a plus, but that a flexible notion of ethics is. They must demand references who can recount specific instances of demonstrated incompetence. How else to explain the sheer number of poorly prepared or careless or sticky-fingered officials crammed into this careening clown-car of an administration?”

The Coz: Jurors have begun deliberations in the Bill Cosby sexual assault trial. He faces up to 10 years in prison on each of three counts.

Cosby is accused of drugging and raping Andrea Constand, a former employee of Cosby’s alma mater, temple University. More than 50 women have accused Cosby of drugging and raping them. Several testified in this trial.

The Obit Page: Jazz pianist and singer Bob Dorough, who wrote the original songs for the educational television series “Schoolhouse Rock,” has died at age 94.

Dorough wrote all the songs for the first season, focusing on math, and a lot of songs for subsequent seasons, which covered grammar, history, and other topics. He wrote the songs many kids memorized including “Three Is a Magic Number,” “My Hero, Zero” and “Conjunction Junction.”

Charity at Home: President Trump is skipping the White House Correspondent’s dinner, which is a fundraiser for scholarships, to hold a political campaign fundraiser for himself. CNN’s Brian Stelter reports that a campaign email quotes Trump  asking, “Why would I want to be stuck in a room with a bunch of fake news liberals who hate me?”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
