ISIS: French President Francois Hollande told a world summit that the Islamic State in Iraq presents a global threat and must be dealt with by a global effort. Hollande called for support of the more moderate rebel forces in Syria to bring the area under control. “Chaos plays into the terrorists’ hands,” he said. Several Arab states have agreed to join in air strikes and a joint statement issued by a coalition of 30 countries pledged to help Iraq fight ISIS “by any means necessary”. Iran has rejected requests to cooperate and Turkey says it will offer only humanitarian aid.
The beheading of British aid worker David Haines, the third such murder of westerners, has added urgency to the call for action against ISIS.
Heavy Weather: Hurricane Odile has hit the Mexican resort town of Cabo San Lucas with winds up to 125 miles per hour. At least 30,000 people have been evacuated from surrounding fishing villages and areas where flimsy homes might blow away.
China: Chinese police have detained 81-year-old Tie Liu, a writer and underground publisher, for “creating a disturbance.” That’s the non-specific charge used for people who disagree with the government. Liu is one of the oldest people recently arrested for criticizing the Communist Party.
World: Forty-one people are dead in Nigeria in the collapse of a guesthouse at the Lagos headquarters of a prominent Christian evangelical pastor. The building was still under construction. >Air France pilots have begun a weeklong strike, grounding about half the airline’s flights. The pilots are protesting the transfer of jobs to a low-cost carrier. >Dozens of migrants trying to reach Europe have drowned after their boat sank off the coast of Libya. The boat carried 250 people and only 36 have been rescued. > England’s Queen Elizabeth has warned the Scots to “think very carefully about the future” when they go to the polls to vote on independence this week.
Cig Suit: The Phillip Morris Company is suing Uruguay for $25 million for the way it requires cigarettes to packaged. The law says 80 percent of a cigarette pack must be covered with warnings including graphic pictures of rotting teeth and hospital scenes. Phillip Morris says it’s a violation of the company’s intellectual property rights.
Hot and Cold: Antarctic sea ice is covering the greatest area since records have been kept, scientists say. Some people who doubt global warming and climate change have seized this as evidence that they’re right, but scientists say it’s all part of the same phenomenon. While sea ice grows, the ice on hard ground is shrinking. Creation of sea ice is stepped up by winds created as a result of overall warming, they say.
Men of Honor: President Obama is expected to Award the Medal of Honor to three men today whose actions in battle were overlooked. Only one of them is still living. Most notably, he’s giving the medal to 1st Lt. Alonzo H. Cushing, who died standing by his guns at Gettysburg, possibly turning the tide of the Civil war. The medal also will be awarded to Army Spec. Donald P. Sloat, who was killed in Vietnam, and Sgt. Ryan Pitts, who was wounded in Afghanistan saving fellow soldiers.
There She Is: Miss New York Kira Kazantsev, originally from California, was named Miss America last night. The 23-year-old speaks Russian and Spanish, plans to go to law school, and looks very good in a bikini.
Econ 101: Celebutante Paris Hilton just bought a $13,000 Pomeranian, causing a plunge in the world market for Chihuahuas.
