Egypt Slaughter, Booker Wins, The Undead

Egypt: Dozens of people are reported dead today after Egyptian forces cleared encampments of protesters supporting deposed president Mohamed Morsi. Security forces used armored vehicles, tear gas, shotguns and automatic rifles. The government reports 95 dead and 900 injured, but The Muslim Brotherhood said the dead number in the hundreds.

National: A UPS cargo jet crashed this morning in a field just outside Birmingham, Ala. The pilot and co-pilot were killed.

  • Popular Newark Mayor Cory Booker won the Democratic nomination for US Senate to replace the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg. He runs against a Tea Party candidate in a special election just weeks before the November general election. Republican Gov. Chris Christie separated the two elections so Booker couldn’t carry the vote for a Democratic governor.

World: Israel released the first 26 of 104 Palestinian prisoners to be freed in exchange for conducting peace talks. Some of the prisoners were held for terrorist attacks carried out as long as 20 years ago.

  • At least 18 Indian sailors are believed trapped aboard a submarine that had an explosion and caught fire in a Mumbai shipyard.

The Undead: The flashing lights and out-of-body sensation described by people who have a near-death experience is caused by a surge of electrical activity in the brain, according to a new report. The conclusion comes from a study of rats. Some people claim to have seen God or exited their body, but one of the researchers said the brain is more active when it’s dying than it is in a normal state of awareness, causing visions and the experience of life flashing before your eyes.

Art News: A cache of stolen paintings worth tens of millions of dollars might not have been burned after all, according to a report in the NY Times. The mother of one of the Romanian thieves originally claimed she burned the works by Gauguin, Matisse, Monet and Picasso to destroy evidence. She later said the paintings were taken away by a Russian-speaking man and now a lawyer representing the thieves says they want to give up the paintings in exchange for a deal.

No, Really: A San Diego area Hooters restaurant hung a sign on its door declaring it would not serve Mayor Bob Filner who has been accused of unwanted sexual attention by 14 women. The sign says, “We believe women should be treated with respect.”
