Vol.2, No. 229
Egypt: Thousands of protesters filled the streets of Cairo today in what the Muslim Brotherhood calls a “Friday of Rage”. Security forces are authorized to kill if they feel threatened and 17 deaths are reported already today. Muslim supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi appear to have gathered strength from Wednesday’s massacre in which the death toll is now 638, with nearly four thousand people injured. Nearly half died in a protest camp in Cairo’s Nasr city district, about 100 in another Cairo encampment, and the rest in other cities.
National: The National Security Agency violated privacy or engaged in unauthorized surveillance thousands of times a year, according to an internal audit cited by the Washington Post. Some violations were intentional and some the result of typographical errors in programming, the Post reports.
Justice Files: A German immigrant who posed for years as an heir to the Rockefeller family was sentenced yesterday to 27 years to life in prison for a 1985 murder in San Marino, Ca. Christian Gerhartsreiter, 52, who went by Clark Rockefeller, was convicted of killing his neighbor John Sohus and burying him in the back yard. He is also suspected of killing Sohus’s wife Linda, whose body was never found. Gerhartsreiter later moved to Boston and married as Rockefeller, but was exposed when he got into a child custody dispute with his ex-wife.
The Obit Page: Bert Lance, a close friend of President Jimmy Carter and his first budget director, has died at age 82. Lance had been a Georgia banker before he was tapped for White House duty, but ended up resigning because of an investigation of his bank’s lending practices.
Actual Mileage May Vary: Ford Motors yesterday lowered its mileage claim for the C-Max hybrid after customers complained it wasn’t anywhere near reality. Ford dropped the car’s 47 mpg rating to 43. Consumer Reports rates the C-Max at 37 mpg.
Area 51: Declassified documents for the first time acknowledge the existence of the Nevada desert base known as “Area 51”. Established in the 1950s to develop the U2 spy plane, it developed a reputation among conspiracy theorists for being the repository for bodies of space aliens. Until now the CIA refused to admit Area 51 existed even though its location was commonly known and there was a movie called “Area 51”.
Baseball Replay: Major League Baseball announced all plays except balls and strikes will be subject to review on instant replay starting next season. It’s good because, you know, the game just needs to slow down.
