Ebola: Senegal has confirmed its first case of Ebola, making it the fifth West African country hit by the epidemic. The patient had travelled from Guinea despite having been infected.
At least 1,500 people have died in the epidemic that began in Guinea. The World Health Organization has warned that as many as 20,000 people may ultimately be infected with Ebola.
Ukraine: Government forces have withdrawn from the airport in the city of Luhansk as Russian-backed rebels make advances on broad fronts in eastern Ukraine. Rebels are also pressing to take the airport in Donetsk and a Ukrainian patrol boat was attacked on the Sea of Azov.
Iraq: Former MI-6 agent Alistair Crooke writes on the Huffington Post that to understand the severity of the ISIS extremists you have to understand the strict philosophy of the 18th century Muslim leader Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab, the founder of “Wahhabism.”
Wahhab preached a life of complete subservience to God and against such frills as prayers for the dead, marked graves, marijuana, music, art, and even honoring the birthday of the Muslim Prophet Muhammed. Wahhab wrote, “Those who would not conform to this view should be killed, their wives and daughters violated, and their possessions confiscated.” That’s ISIS.
Far East: Beijing is on a collision course with Democracy supporters in Hong Kong after ruling out open nominations in elections for Hong Kong’s new leader. Despite promising autonomy to Hong Kong in the handover from Britain, the Chinese legislature said open nominations would create “a chaotic society.” Democracy advocates fear that Beijing wants to pack the nominations with people loyal to the central government.
Libya: A Libyan militia has taken over the US consular compound in Tripoli that was evacuated for the safety of the staff earlier this summer. A video shows the militiamen celebrating and jumping off the roof into the swimming pool.
Flag on the Play: San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald appears to be the first pro-football player arrested on domestic violence charges since Commissioner Roger Goodell laid out definite penalties last week. McDonald was arrested at about 3 am Sunday at a home in San Jose. Goodell ordered a 6-game suspension for first offenses, and indefinite suspension for a second incident.
Bumper Cars:An enormous dust storm in southern Washington State yesterday swept over a highway causing a 50-car pileup. Seven people were sent to the hospital and 20 others had lesser injuries.
The Sports Page: The NFL’s first openly gay player Michael Sams has been passed over by 31 NFL teams Sunday after being released by the Los Angeles Rams. He’s hoping to be signed for the Rams practice squad, or he could play in Canada.
Hacked: A trove of nude and intimate photos of as many as 100 celebrities and notables has been posted on the Internet by a hacker who broke into iCloud. Among the stars whose public image is clearer today; Kate Upton, Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, Kirsten Dunst, Victoria Justice and even Jessica Brown Findlay, who played lady Sybil on “Downton Abbey.” Digital photography has made it possible for millions of people to take pictures they consider private, and made it just as easy for those pictures to go public.
The Obit Page: Glenn Cornick, the original bass player for the 60s British rock band Jethro Tull, died of congestive heart failure at home in Hawaii at age 67. Cornick played with the band for its first three years, but left before they recorded their signature album “Aqualung.”
Any Way You Slice It: Kraft Foods has recalled nearly 8,000 cases of cheese singles because some of the ingredients had not been stored at the proper temperature and the cheese might make you sick. Kraft singles are labeled “Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product,” which is enough to make you sick without eating it.
