Durst Mumbles Admission, Cop Shooting Arrest

Vol. 4, No. 75
Millions and Murder: Robert Durst, the odd real estate heir whose life has swirled with suspicions of murder and who was arrested Saturday, uttered what sounded like an admission last night in the closing moments of a six-part HBO documentary about his life.
Muttering to himself while he was in the bathroom, and still wearing a microphone, Durst says, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
Durst was arrested in New Orleans on a warrant issued in Los Angeles accusing him of the 2000 murder of his close friend Susan Berman. Investigators suspect Berman may have known what happened to Durst’s first wife, who disappeared in 1982.
Durst was also acquitted by reason of self-defense in the killing and dismemberment of a neighbor in Galveston Texas, a bizarre tale all by itself.
Durst is the estranged offspring of a New York real estate family that owns 11 skyscrapers. The Los Angeles police re-opened the Berman case after HBO began airing episodes of “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst,” in which Durst agreed to be interviewed. It may have been his unraveling.
Ferguson: St. Louis County police arrested a suspect in Thursday’s shooting of two police officers during a demonstration outside the Ferguson, Mo. police station. The suspect is Jeffrey Williams, 20, from the St. Louis area, who’s been on probation for stealing stolen property. Police suggested that Williams had taken part in demonstrations, but several protest leaders said they have never seen or heard of him. The criminal complaint is vague about exactly who the gunman was aiming at.
Nothing Doing: Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell is hinting that he might hold hostage the appointment of attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch until the passage of the human trafficking bill. Sounds easy enough but the Republicans slipped anti-abortion language into the trafficking bill and Democrats don’t want to vote for it.
A spokesman for minority leader Harry Reid said, “By continuing to stall Lynch’s nomination Republicans are failing yet another basic test of their ability to govern.”
Redonomics: Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the presidential hopeful whose state once had a $1 billion surplus before he cut taxes, is now running his government in the red and plans to skip a $108 million debt payment. Positioning himself as a responsible fiscal conservative, Walker is struggling to balance his budget by June 30th and skipping debt payments is one of the accounting tricks he can use. But he’ll still be running in the red.
Israeli Elections: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is fighting for survival as Israel goes to the polls tomorrow in elections that appear very close. Ironically it was Netanyahu who called the snap election to consolidate his power, but now he’s in danger of being forced into retirement.
Where’s Vladimir: Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first public appearance in 10 days yesterday, laughing off rumors that he had been terribly ill or deposed in a coup.
Yes, He Said That: Arkansas freshman senator Tom Cotton, author of the infamous Republican letter to Iran, said yesterday on CBS “Face the Nation” that “We have to stand up to Iran’s attempts to drive for regional dominance. They already control Tehran.” Which, we’ll remind you, is the capital of Iran.
