Vol. 8, No. 200
New Target:President Trump’s newest target for blame and abuse is Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings who represents Baltimore, one of the most impoverished cities in America, calling it a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”
Trump is enraged because Cummings was tough on acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan over conditions for migrants at the southern border during ahearing on July 18th. Trump always hits back harder.
The President tweeted about Cummings, “He claims to care about children & their future, however in West Baltimore you will find abandoned homes on every block. Many filled with trash, rodents & homeless looking for shelter.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Trump’s attacks racist.
Cummings is Baltimore’s congressman and while he shares some of the responsibility for the city’s condition, he’s not the mayor or even a member of the city council. Trump went on, “Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen?”
Trump was on a rampage yesterday, also about moves by House Democrats to get the grand jury material underlying the Special Counsel report. He tweeted, “NO COLLUSION, NO OBSTRUCTION, TOTAL EXONERATION. DEMOCRAT WITCH HUNT!”
Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller specifically said during hearing that his investigation was not a witch hunt and his report did not exonerate the President of obstructing justice.
Boeing, Boeing:A blistering report in The NY Timesconcludes that the fatal crashes of two Boeing 737 Max airliners was the result of a new anti-stall system the FAA didn’t fully understand while much of the approval process was left to Boeing itself.
The paper says, “Regulators had never independently assessed the risks of the dangerous software known as MCAS when they approved the plane in 2017.”
The Timessays that “on the Max, the regulator handed nearly complete control to Boeing, leaving some key agency officials in the dark.”
Democraski:Russian police in riot gear yesterday arrested more than 1,000 people protesting the exclusion of opposition politicians from the ballot in an upcoming Moscow city council election. This came just a week after Moscow’s largest opposition rally in years.
A reported 3,500 people gathered near City Hall for the unauthorized protest organized by prominent opposition figure Alexei Navalny. Earlier this week, a Russian court sentenced Navalny to 30 days in jail for calling for the demonstration.
Le Tour: Colombian rider Egan Bernal is poised to become the first from his country to win the Tour de France after finishing yesterday’s penultimate stage in the yellow jersey.
Tradition is that the leader is not challenged on the final day’s ceremonial ride to Paris.
The 22-year-old Bernal, 22, will also become the youngest Tour winner for 110 years.
Summer Jobs:Harrison Duran, a biology student at the University of California, Merced, who was rejected for a summer internship at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, instead went fossil hunting with a college professor in North Dakota and found a 65-million-year-old triceratops skull. He said he still wishes he’d gotten the internship.
