Cosby Mistrial, Trump in the Woods

Mistrial: Camille Cosby issued a blistering statement after her husband’s trial for sexual assault ended in a mistrial.

“How do I describe the district attorney? Heinously and exploitively ambitious,” Cosby wrote. “How do I describe the judge? Overtly and arrogantly collaborating with the district attorney. How do I describe the counsels for the accusers? Totally unethical. How do I describe many, but not all, general media? Blatantly vicious entities that continually disseminated intentional omissions of truths for the primary purpose of greedily selling sensationalism at the expense of a human life.”

The prosecutor said he will try the case again.

A judge in Norristown, Pa., declared a mistrial in the case of comedian Bill Cosby after the jury of seven men and five women was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt crowed, “All those attorneys who conspired, like Gloria Allred, tell them to go back to law school.”

Of the 60 women who have openly accused Cosby of rape and sexual assault, only the charges brought by Andrea Constand, a former employee of Temple University, resulted in a criminal trial.

Into the Woods: President Trump spent the weekend at Camp David in Maryland, presumably measuring the place for gold drapes and faux Louis XIV furniture.

It’s interesting that Trump is holed up in a place he has mocked. “Camp David is very rustic, it’s nice, you’d like it,” Trump told a European reporter before taking office. “You know how long you’d like it? For about 30 minutes.”

After a week in which the President admitted he’s under personal investigation for obstruction of justice, and castigate the deputy attorney general, the Washington Post reports that Trump is having trouble getting people to work for him.

Lisa Rein and Abby Phillip write that, “Republicans say they are turning down job offers to work for a chief executive whose volatile temperament makes them nervous. They are asking head-hunters if their reputations could suffer permanent damage, according to 27 people The Washington Post interviewed to assess what is becoming a debilitating factor in recruiting political appointees.”

At Sea: The bodies of several missing sailors have been found in a berthing compartment aboard the damaged destroyer USS Fitzgerald. Seven were missing, but the navy didn’t say how many were found. The Navy says the ship nearly sank after colliding with a cargo ship.

Tower of London: Authorities say at least 58 people are confirmed to be dead, or missing and presumed dead, in the fire that gutted a London residential tower. Fire safety experts say new cladding installed on the outside of the building may have contributed to the inferno.

Fight Club: A 36-year-old Spanish bullfighting champion was gored and killed in France yesterday. Ivan Fandino was pierced through his right side and tossed in the air.

Less than a year ago, Victor Barrio, 29, was the first Spanish bullfighter killed in 30 years. At the time, his death caused speculation that the sport might die with him.

Of course, it’s always fatal for the bull.

Denial: NBC News tonight airs its interview between newly-hired star Megyn Kelly and conspiracy-theorist Alex Jones, who runs the Infowars website. Jones has said on air that the Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut was a hoax perpetrated with actors and that the US government was behind the 9/11 attacks.

Kelly is looking to make a big splash with her new network and Sandy Hook families are outraged that she’s giving a platform to a man who denies that their children are dead, or ever existed.

A NY Times reader wrote, “It fills me with an indescribable rage. I knew the father of one of the six year old children slaughtered. I attended the memorial. I saw the tiny coffin going into the ground.”

There’s nothing wrong with interviewing anyone so long as you thoroughly dismantle a character as detestable as Jones. It takes skill.

Jones has fed the controversy by releasing recordings of pre-interview conversations with Kelly in which she said, “It’s not going to be some gotcha hit piece, I promise you that.”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
