Vol. 3, No. 263
Political Climate: An estimated 100,000 to 300,000 people marched in Manhattan yesterday, calling for action against global warming and climate change. Scientists carried oversized chalkboards and survivors of Hurricane Sandy wore life preservers.
The People’s Climate March, as it was called, also took place in cities around the world. It happened the same day scientists reported that greenhouse gas emissions continued to rise in 2013, although at a slower pace, in part because of a slowdown in the Chinese economy. Global emissions grew by 2.3 percent, according to the report, but in the US it was 2.9 percent.
Meanwhile, the Rockefeller family, whose fortune was built on the Standard Oil Co., is expected to announce today that the family philanthropic foundation will divest itself of fossil fuel investments. It’s a symbolic effort to fight global warming.
Crisis: Turkey has begun to close some of its border crossings after a surge of 130,000 Syrian Kurdish refugees entered the country in the last four days. Most are from the town of Kobane, which is threatened by ISIS militants. Turkey has taken in more than a million Syrian refugees in the years of the Syrian civil war.
In the Name of God: Visiting Albania, Pope Francis called upon Muslim and all religious leaders to condemn Islamic extremists who pervert religion to justify violence. “To kill in the name of God is a grave sacrilege,” the Pope said. “To discriminate in the name of God is inhuman.”
Welcome Home: The NY Times reports that the bodies of Russian soldiers returned for burial at home attest to Russia’s direct involvement in the eastern Ukraine uprising. Families have not been told where or how their young men died. Many of the funerals have been held at dawn so people would not see them and the Russian government has not released information about the deaths of soldiers. The public doesn’t know how many were killed.
Nation: The family of Omar Gonzalez, 42, who’s accused of breaking into The White House, says he’s an Iraq war veteran who has post-traumatic stress syndrome and needs help. > Police in Pennsylvania say they have found a rifle carried by the man who ambushed a state police barracks and killed one trooper nearly two weeks ago. The search is concentrated within miles of where the suspect Eric Frein grew up.
Outer Limits: The private exploration company SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 cargo ship carrying 5,000 pounds of supplies to the International Space Station. Among mice and fruit flies, the ship is also carrying a 3-D printer. NASA hopes to be able to print spare parts in space.
The Obit Page: Eric “The Actor” Lynch, an occasional sidekick to shock jock Howard Stern whose birth deformities limited him to a wheelchair, has died in Sacramento at age 39. He was part of what Stern calls his “Wack Pack.” Lynch, sometimes known as “Eric the Midget,” never gave full details about his condition, but he was only three feet tall.
Mystery Mound: An archeological dig at a tomb dating to the time of Alexander the Great has Greeks intrigued about who might be buried inside. Discovered in August, the site dates to the 4th Century BC and is believed to be the largest burial site ever discovered in Greece. At a time when the country is absorbed with its financial troubles, the mystery of the burial site has provided Greeks with a welcome diversion.
Naked Truth: Another batch of celebrity nude photos was released over the weekend on the website 4chan. Among the naked; Vanessa Hudgens, Avril Lavigne, Kim Kardashian, Aubrey Plaza, Mary-Kate Olsen, and soccer goalie Hope Solo. There are so many of these pictures out there that it kind of makes you think that famous women just hang around taking nude photos of themselves.
