China on the Phone, Diamond Heist

Trading Up:President Trump said in France today that he got a phone call from Chinese President Xi Jinping offering to re-open trade talks. “We were called and we’re going to start very shortly to negotiate,” Trump said at the G-7 summit in Biarritz, France. “We’ll see what happens, but I think we’re going to make a deal.”

With world financial markets tumbling because of the trade war, both countries have an interest in talking. Liu He, the Chinese vice premier, said, “We believe that the escalation of the trade war is not beneficial for China, the United States nor to the interests of the people of the world.”

Never one to stop doing business on his own behalf, Trump told reporters that he’s considering hosting next year’s G-7 at his Doral resort in Miami. “It’s a great place,” Trump told reporters. “It’s got tremendous acreage, many hundreds of acres, so we can handle whatever happens. It’s really — people are really liking it.”

Conspiracy Theory:President Trump is feeding the tale that Michigan Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of his favorite enemies, married her own brother, retweeting video of Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton on the right wing Breitbart News.

Fitton, said, “There’s credible evidence she married her brother, and committed tax and marriage fraud, and maybe immigration and student loan fraud tied up in that. It’s so bad in terms of documentary evidence we can’t be certain her last name is Omar.”

Notice how Fitton doesn’t produce the evidence?

Trump himself mentioned the allegation that Omar had married her brother on July 17. Talking to reporters before boarding Marine One, Trump said, “There’s a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother. I know nothing about it.”

Bug Splatter:Radio host and former Illinois Republican congressman Joe Walsh declared himself a primary candidate against President Trump yesterday saying, “I’m betting you’re tired of having an unfit con man for a president.”

In his statement of declaration Walsh described Trump as “A president who sides with foreign dictators over our intelligence community. A president who spews hate virtually every time he opens his mouth. A president who is teaching millions of American children it’s okay to lie and it’s okay to bully.”

Ice heist:Armed robbers, one of them wearing a black fedora, took over a Diamond District store in Manhattan yesterday, tied up the employees, and cleaned out the place.

Witnesses said the robbers behaved like customers at Avianne and Co., browsing the jewels before pulling handguns on the four employees. The store is known for selling bling to hip-hoppers and celebrities.

After restraining the staff with zip ties, the robbers raided the safe and display cases, dumping nearly all of the jewels into  a duffle bag before running off. The take is worth about $4 million dollars.

The News Roundup: Former Phoenix Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was convicted of criminal contempt and pardoned by President Trump, says he’s running for sheriff again in 2020. The 87-year-old blowhard who billed himself as “America’s toughest sheriff” said in a Twitter post,“Thousands want me to run for Sheriff. Ready for bruising, bitter campaign. Never back down.”— Hong Kong police over the weekend drew their guns for the first time during political protests that have continued since June. One of the cops fired a warning shot. — The team from River Ridge, Louisiana, the US champion, defeated international champion Curaçao, 8-0, for the 2019 little League title.

The Obit Page: Larry Taylor the bassist for the 1960s blues rock band Canned Heat has died at age 77. He performed with the band in what became a legendary set at Woodstock in 1969.

Duke Nukem:The hurricane season is arriving and President Trump thinks he’s got a way to handle it.

The President wonders why the military can’t stop hurricanes with nuclear bombs, the website Axios reports. The website says that during a hurricane briefing the President said,  “I got it. I got it. Why don’t we nuke them?” according to a source in the room.

Paraphrasing the President the source told Axios that Trump said,  “They start forming off the coast of Africa, as they’re moving across the Atlantic, we drop a bomb inside the eye of the hurricane and it disrupts it. Why can’t we do that?”

Trump tweeted this morning, “I never said this. Just more FAKE NEWS!”

It’s possible he never said it. The problem is that it sounds just like something he would say.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
