Boston: Investigators say that so far it appears that the Boston Marathon bombing suspects acted alone. But investigators are also following leads in Russia where Tamarlan Tsarnaev spent six months. Tamarlan bought large fireworks in New Hampshire. In the week since the bombing donors have already given $20 million to One Fund Boston, which was established to help victims.
Houseware Dept.: Anderson Cooper opened his show last night promising “breaking news”, then announced that CNN has learned that the Boston bombers bought their pressure cookers at Macy’s.
National: Charges were suddenly dropped yesterday against a Mississippi man accused of sending ricin-contaminated letters to the President and a US Senator. The FBI said they found no ricin in Paul Curtis’s home. So the Elvis impersonator left the building and investigators went on to search the home of another potential suspect.
- A Philadelphia couple that believes in faith healing rather than taking their kids to the doctor, has lost their second child. The 8-month-old son of Herbert and Catherine Schaible stopped eating and died after suffering diarrhea and breathing trouble. The couple was already on probation after their two-year-old son died without receiving medical care four years ago.
- The Associated Press Twitter account was hacked yesterday with a Tweet that said the White House had been bombed and President Obama injured. The stock market took a 150-point nosedive but bounced back when the AP debunked the story. An organization called The Syrian Electronic Army took responsibility.
World: France became the 14th country to legalize gay marriage. Some violent protests broke out after the vote in Parliament, but polls show a majority of the French are “oui, oui” with same sex marriage.
iStock: Apple Computer, which has $145 billion in cash sitting around, is going to borrow money to pay dividends to stockholders rather than bring $102 billion back from overseas and pay US tax on it. Apple profits dropped by $2 billion in the first quarter of the year, but the stock went up a bit yesterday because iPhone sales are good.
Hit and Miss: The Los Angeles Police Department agreed to pay $4.2 million to two women injured when their pickup truck was shot up by officers searching for killer and former cop Christopher Dorner. The color of the truck, the license plate, and in particular the two Hispanic women did not match the description of the large black man the cops were hunting. The LAPD paid $40,000 separately for a new truck.
