Hatemail: An eighth suspicious package was found this morning outside a New York hotel owned by actor Robert DeNiro.
A major federal investigation is underway after bombs and suspicious packages were intercepted yesterday on their way to prominent liberal targets of right-wing hatred, including two former presidents and the New York headquarters of CNN.
President Trump last night blamed the press at a rally saying, “The media has a responsibility to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility.”
The bombs were described as crude but functional, although none of them exploded.
Among the intended victims were Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack and Michelle Obama, former CIA Director John Brennan, former Attorney Gen. Eric Holder, Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters.
The offices of CNN were evacuated until they were cleared. Their anchors had to report their own story from the street.
A bomb sent to billionaire philanthropist George Soros was found in his mailbox on Tuesday.
All of the packages listed the sender as Wasserman Schultz at her Florida office address. A package was sent to Brennan at CNN even though he acts as consultant at NBC News.
President Trump, who in recent weeks has talked about Democratic politicians as if they are the enemy of Democracy and constitutional rule, said yesterday, “At these times we have to unify and send one very clear and strong message that acts of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America.”
Blackface: NBC News host Megyn Kelly is in deep trouble after musing on the air about why it’s considered politically incorrect for white people to dress up in “blackface” for Halloween. She said it was OK when she was growing up. Reports say there’s a lot of internal rumbling within NBC and Kelly might lose her job.
Hearkening back to the days of minstrel shows in which white men played foolish black characters, a white person painting their face black is considered an abject act of racism.
Yesterday Kelly delivered a tearful on-air apology, but it might not save her. At an internal staff meeting NBC President Andrew Lack said, “There is no other way to put this, but I condemn those remarks. There is no place on our air or in this workplace for them.”
What Goes Up: The Dow Jones lost 608 points yesterday, adding to a string of losses that have wiped out all gains for 2018. The Dow this morning is down 0.6 percent for the year.
CBS MarketWatch says, “Mounting concerns about slowing global economic expansion and corporate earnings boiled over late Wednesday.”
OK, whatever that means. The stock market is still at historically high levels.
The Usual Suspects: In his first public pronouncement about the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman yesterday denounced the “heinous crime.”
Salman, who is suspected of having ordered the murder himself, said, “The crime was really painful to all Saudis, and I believe it is painful to every human in the world.” He said, “It is a heinous crime that cannot be justified.”Western intelligence officers believed no one would have lifted a hand against Khashoggi without Salman ordering it.
In what appeared to be an officially orchestrated even Wednesday, Jamal Khashoggi’s son, Salah bin Jamal Khashoggi, shook hands and accepted condolences from King Salman and heir, the Crown Prince.
The Series: Boston won game two of the World Series 4-2 last night at Fenway Park. They now lead 2-0 as the Series moves to Los Angeles for game three tomorrow night.
Fatal Beat: Canadian rapper Jon James fell to his death wing-walking on a Cessna aircraft while shooting a music video.
The rapper, 34, whose full name is Jon James McMurray, liked to do extreme stunts.
Witnesses said he stepped to the edge of the wing, forcing the plane into a spiral dive. He was said to have hung on too long to use his parachute and plummeted to his death. The pilot regained control and landed.
The Obit Page: Dorcas Reilly, a New Jersey woman who invented the green bean casserole made with green beans and a can of Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup, has died of Alzheimer’s disease at age 92. The dish was topped with crunchy fried onions, also from a can.
Millions of American have served the dish ever since.
Reilly was a Campbell Soup kitchen supervisor in 1955 when she invented the dish for an Associated Press feature. It was a dark era in American cuisine.
