Dallas: President Obama walked a fine line yesterday at the Dallas memorial for five murdered police officers, recognizing the loss while trying to be conciliatory and asking for understanding of people who have marched in protest of unjustified police killings.

“We cannot simply turn away and dismiss those in peaceful protest as troublemakers or paranoid,” Obama said. “We can’t simply dismiss it as a symptom of political correctness or reverse racism. To have your experience denied like that, dismissed by those in authority, dismissed perhaps even by your white friends and co-workers and fellow church members again and again and again — it hurts.”

He also wagged a figurative finger at those who have spoken against the police. “Protesters, you know it,” Obama said. “You know how dangerous some of the communities where these police officers serve are, and you pretend as if there’s no context. These things we know to be true.”

In the front row were five empty seats holding American flags and police caps in memory of the five officers. It was Obama’s 11^th appearance after a mass shooting. He said, “I’ve spoken at too many memorials during the course of this presidency. I’ve hugged too many families. I’ve seen how inadequate words can be in bringing about lasting change. I’ve seen how inadequate my own words have been.”

Trail’s End: At long last, Bernie Sanders bowed and endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. The Bern has berned out. On stage in New Hampshire yesterday he said, “I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States.”

It wasn’t the most comfortable endorsement with Clinton standing somewhat woodenly by Sanders’ side as he gave her his uninspiring approval. They aren’t close and neither are their supporters. A recent Pew poll says that 85 percent of Democrats who voted for Sanders will vote for Hillary, but for many it will be with a bone in their throat. Some attendees at yesterday’s event carried signs saying “Won’t Vote Hillary.”

Sanders spoke about income inequality, global, warming, gay rights, Supreme Court nominations, and directly targeted Donald Trump, thundering, “His reckless economic policies will not only exacerbate income and wealth inequality, they would increase our national debt by trillions of dollars.”

Politi-Salad: Fox News has suspended former House Speaker Newt Gingrich from his role as a political analyst because he’s a prime candidate to be Donald Trump’s running mate. Indiana’s Gov. Mike Pence is the more likely choice — Trump called Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg “a disgrace” because she called him “a faker” who has “an ego” — Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who’s become Hillary Clinton’s pit bull, has been asked to speak on the first night of the Democratic Convention — House Speaker Paul Ryan failed in his attempt to block Hillary Clinton from receiving classified intelligence briefings, as is customary for presidential nominees. Ryan claimed that after her email screw-up Clinton can’t be trusted with secrets — The New Black Panther Party announced it plans to take advantage of Ohio’s “open carry” law and carry weapons at Republican convention events next week.

Money, Money: Both the Dow Jones and Standard & Poor’s stock indexes hit records yesterday. The Dow closed at 18,347.67 and the

S&P at 2,152.14.

The Legend Lives: The mysterious DB Cooper was last seen in 1971 parachuting out of an airliner with $200,000. The FBI has looked for Cooper, and the money, for 45 years and just announced they’ve given up.

On November 24, 1971, in Portland, Ore., a man identifying himself as Dan Cooper paid cash for a ticket on Northwest Orient Airlines. With the plane in the air, the man told the flight crew he had a bomb. When the plane landed in Seattle, he was paid $200,000 ransom for the passengers and was given four parachutes. He ordered the pilots to fly to Mexico.

But when the plane was nearly two miles in the air, Cooper parachuted out of a rear hatch into history, legend, song, and now a closed investigation.

Decline of Civilization: Amidst the national craze over the new cellphone game “Pokeman Go,” Arlington National Cemetery tweeted the following: “We do not consider playing “Pokemon Go” to be appropriate decorum on the grounds of ANC.”
