The Killers: ISIS militants have released a video purported to be the beheading of American journalist James Foley, kidnapped two years ago in Syria. Foley, 40, was working as a freelance journalist for the online Global Post and for Agence France Presse. He was shown with a shaved head kneeling in the desert in an orange jumpsuit. Before he is killed Foley says, under evident stress, “I call on my friends, family and loved ones to rise up against my real killers – the U.S. government — for what will happen to me is only a result of their complacent criminality.”
World leaders have described the act as “barbaric.”
ISIS appears to be enraged by US airstrikes. On the video the executioner also threatens to kill another American, Steven Sotloff. The killer says, “The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision.”
Hands Up: Despite some confrontations between police and protesters, things were a little quieter in Ferguson, Mo. last night. No gunshots or Molotov cocktails were reported, but 47 people were arrested.
Atty. Gen. Eric Holder is scheduled to visit today to speak with investigators about the police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. A Grand Jury investigation also starts today.
Return Fire: The wife and child of Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif have been killed in an Israeli airstrike. Israel and Hamas traded 137 rocket attacks for 92 air strikes since a ceasefire ended yesterday. More than 2100 people are dead in six weeks of fighting.
Ebola: The West Africa Ebola outbreak continues unabated with the death toll pushing toward 1,300. Some health experts say the outbreak is much worse than the reported numbers. There’s no known cure for Ebola, but some patients given an experimental drug called ZMapp have shown remarkable improvement. But the company that makes the drug has already run through its entire supply, enough to treat only a half dozen people.
School Daze: Police in South Pasadena, Calif. say they foiled a plot by two teenage boys to shoot three staff members at the local high school and randomly kill other people. The boys 16 and 17 have been arrested and charged with conspiracy and criminal threats. Police say someone tipped off the high school administration, which then called the cops. Investigators say conversations from seized computers reveal the boys “coldheartedly” discussing the plot.
Spin: Forbes Magazine has published a list not of the top billionaires, but the richest disc jockeys. Evidently knowing how to play music to whip a crowd into a dancing frenzy is well-paid work. Top of the list is a guy named Calvin Harris who made $66 million last year. Harris told Forbes. “I happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
Texass: Texas Gov. Rick Perry turned himself in for booking late yesterday on felony charges that he abused official power to try to force a local district attorney out of office. Many critics, including the NY Times, have described the prosecution of Perry as a stretch. “Bad political judgment is not necessarily a felony.” But it sure is fun. They took his fingerprints and sat him for a mug shot for which he put on a smile. Maybe he can turn it around with a campaign poster: “Wanted for President.”
