Baltimore Cop Innocent, Message to Pakistan

Black Lives: One of the Baltimore police officers indicted in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died of injuries suffered in police custody, has been acquitted of all charges.

Off. Edward M. Nero chose to be tried before a judge rather than a jury, and was cleared on charges of second-degree assault, misconduct, and reckless endangerment.

Nero was involved only in the initial arrest, not in the fatal ride in a police van. Judge Barry Williams said, “There has been no evidence that the defendant intended for a crime to occur.” The verdict was the first for any of the six officers charged in the case.

Mullah Down: Confirming the death of Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour, President Obama called it “an important milestone.” The president said in a statement, “The Taliban should seize the opportunity to pursue the only real path for ending this long conflict — joining the Afghan government in a reconciliation process that leads to lasting peace and stability.”

The US hit Mansour in a drone strike inside Pakistan without notifying Pakistan. That makes it a message to Pakistan, which has failed to confront the Taliban within its borders.

The Larry David Show: Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, who’s fighting to his last breath for the party’s nomination, says he’s taking his progressive agenda all the way to the convention. It could be contentious, he told the Associated Press. “I think if they make the right choice and open the doors to working-class people and young people and create the kind of dynamism that the Democratic Party needs, it’s going to be messy,” Sanders said. “Democracy is not always nice and quiet and gentle but that is where the Democratic Party should go.”

Sanders said he thinks he has a shot at winning the June 7 California primary and asked, “What happens if I win a major victory in California? Will people say, ‘Oh, we’re really enthusiastic about Hillary Clinton despite the fact that Bernie Sanders has now won whatever it may be, 25 states, half the states?'”

Hillary: Clinton has turned down a request to debate Sanders in California to focus on Donald Trump as her true opponent. She’s taping a segment on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” today.

The Supremes: The Court ruled 7-1 yesterday that Georgia violated the rights of a black murder defendant by trying him in front of a jury with no black members. Clarence Thomas, the only black member of the Supreme Court, was the single vote of dissent.

Just a Pinch: The family of Tony Gwynn, the baseball Hall of Famer who chewed tobacco for 31 years and died of salivary gland cancer, is suing the tobacco industry for wrongful death. Gwynn was introduced to so-called “smokeless tobacco” while a student at San Diego State University. He played for 20 years with the San Diego Padres with a pinch of chew in his mouth. The suit says that he used about 2 ½ cans of tobacco every day for 31 years, sometimes going to sleep at night with dip still in his mouth.

Build the Wall: Donald Trump has filed an application to build a big wall. Not that wall, but a wall in Ireland to protect one of his luxury golf courses from rising sea levels. He’s not even demanding that Ireland build it. But what’s interesting is that the presidential candidate who has dismissed global warming and climate change as a “hoax” cited global warming and climate change as the justification for building his seawall. His application cites “rising sea levels and increased storm frequency and wave energy associated with global warming” as a threat to his Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in County Clare. In the world of Donald Trump, global warming is real only when it affects a golf course.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
