Black Lives: Thousands of police and troops are deployed in Baltimore today following a night of rioting and looting that broke out after the funeral of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. The governor of Maryland declared a state of emergency and called out the National Guard.
At least 15 police officers were injured and 200 people were arrested. Police say they received a “credible threat” that three street gangs have teamed up to “take out” police officers.
The violence started several hours after more than 2,200 people attended the funeral of the young man who died as a result of injuries suffered in police custody. Rioters threw rocks, burned cars, and looted stores. A major shopping center was looted.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced a weeklong 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew. She said, “We will have order. We will have peace.”
A police spokesman said the cops would be tough. “You’re going to see tear gas. You’re going to see pepper balls. We’re going to use appropriate methods to make sure we can preserve the safety of that community.”
More than two weeks after Gray was arrested and ended up in the hospital fatally injured, investigators still have not explained what happened.
The Vows: The Supreme Court is hearing arguments today on whether it is a Constitutional right for people of the same sex to marry. The court is hearing appeals against the ban on same-sex marriage in four states. The resulting decision will determine whether same-sex marriage must be legal in all 50 states, or whether states that want to ban it may continue to do so.
Nonprofit: The for profit chain of Corinthian Colleges abruptly went out of business yesterday, closing its 28 remaining campuses and shutting the door on 16,000 students. Corinthian tanked because the Department of Education cut off its access to federal student loans after it had been accused of falsifying its record for placing graduates in jobs. Many for profit colleges are dependent upon their students paying tuition with federal loans.
Nepal: The number of dead counted in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake is above 5,000 and may grow to 10,000, the government says. A humanitarian crisis is brewing as the military and aid workers struggle to get help to homeless and isolated victims of the quake.
World: The captain of the overloaded South Korean ferry that rolled over a year ago, killing more than 300 passengers, was sentenced to life in prison. He was initially convicted of negligence, but a higher court changed the verdict to homicide.
>A robotic Russian cargo spaceship launched today to the International Space Station is spinning out of control and not answering radio commands. It’s carrying 6,000 pounds of food, fuel and other supplies.
Deadline Business: Journalism was a particularly deadly business in 2014, according to the Society for Professional Journalists. Sixty reporters were killed in the world’s hotspots, including Americans James Foley and Steven Sotloff, who were beheaded by Islamic State fighters. The greatest number, 17, were killed in Syria.
The Obit Page: Jayne Meadows, the actress wife of the late comedian and television personality Steve Allen, has died at age 95. In the 1950s she was a panelist on the popular game show “I’ve Got a Secret.” Allen was her second husband and together in their time they were one of the most popular couples in Hollywood.
Marriage Rap: Mariah Carey is singing a new song about her estranged husband Nick Cannon, who left the diva saying she was too much to handle. One of the lyrics says, “Boy you actin’ so corny like Fritos.” Oh, yeah, that’ll bring him back.
