Nation: Two gunmen were killed by the police last night near Garland, Tex. after they opened fire outside an anti-Islam event that featured an exhibit of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. The two gunman shot a security guard and were in turn shot by police officers, according to the police.
Investigators today were collecting evidence at an apartment in Phoenix, Ariz.
The event was organized by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, an anti-Islam group based in New York. They were offering a $10,000 prize for the best caricature of Muhammad. AFDI is run by the stridently anti-Islamic crusader Pamela Geller, whose organization is listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group.
The Gathering Crowd: Former Hewlett Packard boss Carly Fiorina announced on Good Morning America today that she’s running for president. Fiorina promises to bring her business sense to the office, although she was fired after running HP into the ground.
Also in now is retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. “I’m willing to be part of the equation and therefore, I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States of America,” he said on Ohio radio station WKRC.
Carson came from nowhere to prominence two years ago at the National Prayer Breakfast when he criticized Obamacare. He has some tendency to put his foot in his mouth, having recently said that homosexuality in prisons proves that being gay is “absolutely” a choice. He told the WKRC interviewer that he has learned his lesson and, “I don’t wander off into those extraneous areas that can be exploited.”
Baltimore: The city has lifted the curfew put in place to put the damper on rioting after the death of Freddie Gray. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said in a statement, “My goal has always been to not have the curfew in place a single day longer than was necessary.”
Nepal: Cracks in the runway forced Nepal to close the Katmandu airport to large military aircraft and transports bringing in relief supplies. Despite the hang-up, the UN says the supply flow is beginning to improve.
The number of dead is now listed at 7,276, including 57 foreigners, nine Americans among them. At least 109 people are still listed as missing.
World: Some of the women recently freed from captivity by Boko Haram extremists in Nigeria say that a few of their fellow captives were stoned to death as the army approached to free them. About 700 women have been freed from camps in the Sambisa forest in just the past week. They said that male members of their families were killed in front of them and many of the women were forced into marriages with Boko Haram fighters.
>More than 5,800 migrants who departed from North Africa in crowded boats were rescued in the Mediterranean over the weekend, according to the Italian Coast Guard. The Italians have stepped up rescue operations after at least 1,750 migrants have been lost at sea so far this year.
The Royals: The latest addition to the British royal family has been named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Her official title: “Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.”
Splitsville: Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn. She announced it on Facebook. Mutual respect, blah, blah, blah. Really? Is that how it’s done these days?
