Black Lives: A woman in Minnesota last night calmly-live streamed video of the moments after police shot and killed her boyfriend in the driver’s seat of his car.
You can hear her saying, “Please, officer, don’t tell me that you just did this to him,” she said. “You shot four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his license and registration, sir.” Her young daughter was in the back seat.
It happened in Falcon Heights, north of St. Paul. The Minneapolis Star Tribune identified the dead man as Philando Castile, a 32-year-old cafeteria supervisor at a Montessori school in St. Paul. According to the woman her boyfriend had told the police officer he had a gun in his car before reaching for his license.
In a separate incident, the Justice Department announced that it is opening an investigation into the police shooting of a black man in Baton Rouge two nights ago. Several hundred protesters were in the streets again last night.
Fair and Balanced: Former “Fox & Friends” host Gretchen Carlson has filed a sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuit against her former boss Roger Ailes, accusing him of suggesting that the two have sex and firing her because she refused.
Carlson was on the popular morning show for seven years, until 2013 when she was bumped to an afternoon slot then fired last month. Carlson’s lawsuit claims that during a meeting, Ailes told her they could have settled their problems if the two had sex. Her complaint quotes Ailes saying, “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago and then you’d be good and better and I’d be good and better.”
Aside from the inappropriateness, if it’s true, Roger Ailes also looks like Jabba the Hutt and would have a hard time scoring with Mrs. Hutt.
Nation: The May 6 drowning of a Navy SEAL trainee, previously described as an accident, has been ruled a homicide by the San Diego medical examiner. Seaman James Lovelace was having difficulty swimming in a pool in boots and fatigues. His instructors dunked him underwater until his face was purple and his lips were blue.
The report says, “It is our opinion that the actions, and inactions, of the instructors and other individuals involved were excessive and directly contributed to the death, and the manner of death is best classified as homicide.”
Classification as a homicide does not necessarily mean the instructors will be charged. It means only at a minimum that Lovelace died as a result of the actions of his trainers.
>Some House Democrats booed Bernie Sanders in a meeting yesterday because he so far has refused to pull out of the presidential race and endorse Hillary Clinton.
Afterthought: A damning report says former British Prime Minister Tony Blair led his country into the Iraq war by overstating the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, sent ill-prepared troops into battle, and had no plan for what would happen afterwards.
Blair said in response, “The intelligence assessments made at the time of going to war turned out to be wrong, the aftermath turned out to be more hostile, protracted and bloody than ever we imagined…. and a nation whose people we wanted to set free from the evil of Saddam became instead victims of sectarian terrorism.”
And he said, “For all of this, I express more sorrow, regret and apology than you may ever know or can believe.”
This Bud’s for You: Medicare prescriptions have dropped in states where medical marijuana is legal, according to research published in Health Affairs. Marijuana is being used as a replacement for drugs that treat anxiety, depression, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders, and spasticity. The researchers say Medical marijuana saved Medicare about $165 million in 2013.
Of course marijuana is not covered by insurance so it costs the user more money. Doctors also have trouble patients on how much to take. One doctor is quoted asking, “Do I say take two hits and call me in the morning?”
