Vol. 5, No. 224
Now This: Donald Trump said nothing out of the usual yesterday that should eliminate him from consideration for President of the United States. Oh wait, he said President Obama is the founder of the Islamic State. “In many respects, you know, they honor President Obama,” Trump said during a rally outside Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “He is the founder of ISIS.”
The Demohack Party: The Russian hacking of Democratic Party computers appears to be much worse than originally thought, according to a report in the NY Times. As many as 100 party officials may have been hacked and the Democrats are bracing for more public embarrassments.
The Games: With Katie Ledecky swimming the anchor leg, the US women won gold in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay. It’s the fourth gold for Ledecky. American cyclist Kristin Armstrong (no relation to the cheater Lance) won her third consecutive gold medal in the individual road time trial. That makes her the first athlete to win the same Olympic cycling event three times in a row — Dmitriy Balandin of Kazakhstan won his country’s first-ever gold medal for swimming in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke. Olympic newcomer Josh Prenot won silver for the US — Television ratings for NBC’s coverage are down 20 percent from 2012.
World: Fire struck in the maternity ward of one of Baghdad’s main hospitals Tuesday night, quickly engulfing the nursery and killing 12 babies. The nursery was locked with no adults inside and the staff couldn’t find the keys. It took firefighters an hour and a half to arrive.
Nation: The Associated Press reports that, according to a source close to the investigation, the 10-year-old boy killed on the world’s tallest water slide in Kansas City was decapitated. Two women who were on the slide raft with the boy had minor injuries. The cause of the accident has yet to be explained — Lonnie David Franklin Jr., the 63-year-old Southern California serial killer known as the “Grim Sleeper,” who is credited with 25 murders, was sentenced to death yesterday in Los Angeles. Franklin, who had earlier been convicted of nine murders dating back to the 1980s, recently was convicted of another 10.
Because It’s There: A man using suction cups attempting to climb the glass walls of the Trump Tower in New York yesterday caused a live television spectacle like a Los Angeles car chase. About two hours into the climb, police waiting in an open window on the 21st floor hauled the Manhattan mountaineer inside. Police say the man was trying to get a meeting with Donald Trump.
The Obit Page: John Saunders, a familiar sports reporter who covered college football for ABC and ESPN, died at age 61 of causes that have not been released. Saunders, a mature voice of calm in the sometimes hyper world of sports reporting, had been with ESPN since 1981. He had hosted the Sunday morning round table “The Sports Reporters,” since 2001. — Bernard Farrelly, the Australian surfer who won the sport’s first world championship at Manly Beach in Sydney in 1964, has died at age 71.
Editor’s note: The editorial staff of The Rooney Report will be off the electrical grid tomorrow, taking its first day off in four years. The Report will resume Saturday depending upon the severity of muscle soreness.
