Angelina: Actress Angelina Jolie announced in a NY Times opinion piece that she quietly had a double mastectomy because she has a high genetic risk of breast cancer. Her mother died of cancer. Jolie went through three months of procedures, including restoration. She wrote, “Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.”
Scandal #3: A “massive and unprecedented intrusion” is what the Associated Press calls the Justice Department’s secret examination of AP telephone records. The Justice Department targeted AP reporters and editors who broke a story about the CIA foiling a terror plot in Yemen.
National: President Obama vowed to get to the bottom of accusations that the IRS targeted conservative political groups for scrutiny. “You don’t want the IRS ever being perceived to be biased,” the president said. In the same appearance before reporters the President blew off continuing accusations of cover up and wrongdoing in the Benghazi consulate attack. “There’s no there there,” Obama said.
- A Philadelphia abortion doctor was found guilty of first-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for killing live fetuses and causing the death of a patient. Dr. Kermit Gosnell, who performed abortions for 30 years, was accused of performing illegal and late-term abortions, sometimes even snipping the spinal cord of a live baby.
Big Farma: The Supreme Court ruled that an Indiana farmer, who planted genetically engineered soybeans without paying the agri-giant Monsanto, infringed on the company’s patent. Vernon Bowman planted beans from a local supplier that were a mix of varieties, including Monsanto’s Roundup resistant beans. Monsanto sued and won an $84,000 judgment. The ruling basically means farmers cannot re-plant seeds from crops originally grown from patented seed.
The Obit Page: The national shrink, Dr. Joyce Brothers, has died in New York at age 85. Brothers gained instant fame appearing in 1955 on “The 64,000 Question” quiz show answering questions about boxing. She went on to become a ubiquitous dispenser of personal and psychological advice on radio, television and in print. Brothers appeared on sitcoms and quiz shows and was on “The Tonight Show” nearly 100 times.
Low Mileage: Americans are driving less, according to a study published today. Unemployment is a factor, but the younger generation known as “Millennials” are riding bikes and taking public transit.
