London Bridge:President Trump met with British Prime Minister Theresa may yesterday to talk about trade even as the Brits wrestle with exiting the European Union and may is just three days from leaving office.
Trump said that Britain is the biggest trade partner the United States has, a fact he then claimed many people don’t know know. They don’t because it isn’t true. China was the United States’ largest trading partner in 2018and Britain was No. 7.
He told the departing May, “I don’t know exactly what your timing is, but stick around let’s do this deal.”
Protesters marched once again today, pulling a giant balloon depicting Trump as a crying baby in diapers holding a cellphone.
It’s been a mixed greeting over there. Last night the Trumps had dinner with the royals. His Corpulence sat next to Her Majesty.
Monopoly:Several branches of the federal government are starting to take a hard look at breaking up the tech giants that dominate and control social media and the internet.
It’s a big job. The Justice Department has agreed to handle potential antitrust investigations into Apple and Google, while the Federal Trade Commission will deal with Facebook and Amazon.
House legislators said yesterday that they were looking into possible anti-competitive behavior among the tech behemoths. That could lead to the first overhaul of antitrust rules in many decades since the days of Standard Oil, attempting to keep up with an industry that didn’t when antitrust laws were written.
Crackdown:Under pressure from the US, Mexico has begun to crack down on migrants passing through the country headed north to the US, The NY Times reports. Kirk Semple reports from Tapachula near the border with Guatamala that authorities have been conducting raids and rounding up migrants.
President Trump recently threatened to place tariffs on all Mexican goods entering the US if the government doesn’t do something to block the flow of migrants.
Final Jeopardy: Defeated “Jeopardy!”phenom James Holzhauer said on “CBS This Morning” that, “I thought I could win 6-7 episodes, certainly not 32.” He was known for making big bets and having an encyclopedic mind. He answered correctly 97 percent of the time.
The News Roundup:Congress finally passed the $19.1 billion disaster aide bill. It includes money for Puerto Rico that President Trump didn’t want and does not include money for his border wall that he did want. — The body of a third transgender woman has been found murdered in Dallas, raising the prospect that a serial killer is on the loose with a specific target. — Four people were shot and killed on Tuesday in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, when a gunman went on a shooting spree in the city’s main business district.
The Day the Music Died:First it was the long-paying record, then eight-tracks, cassette tapes, and the CD. The invention and extinction of music-playing formats has accelerated to a breathtaking pace. The latest is iTunes. Apple announced that it is breaking up its 99 cents digital music sales service into separate applications for music, video, and podcasts. Apple started the digital sales revolution 18 years ago.
Just as digital cut into sales of CDs, streaming music has diminished the sale of downloads.
The Sports Page:The St. Louis Blues, who were in last place in January, beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 last night at home to tie up the Stanley Cup finals at 2-2. St. Louis coach Craig Berube said, “We were relentless tonight. We didn’t stop for 60 minutes.” Game five is Thursday night.
Sad!:While over in London dealing with world affairs, President Trump. took a moment to suggest a boycott of AT&T because he doesn’t like the news coverage he gets from the company’s subsidiary, CNN.
He tweeted, “I believe that if people stoped using or subscribing to @ATT, they would be forced to make big changes at @CNN, which is dying in the ratings anyway. It is so unfair with such bad, Fake News! Why wouldn’t they act. When the World watches @CNN, it gets a false picture of USA. Sad!”
It is our fervent hope that the President also calls for a boycott of The Rooney Report.
