Middle East: At least six members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas were killed in Israeli air strikes in Gaza. Israel said the strikes were in retaliation for rocket attacks.
The region is simmering after the killing of three Israeli teenagers and the apparent retaliatory killing of a Palestinian boy. Israel has arrested or detained hundreds of people in their investigation of the abduction of the three boys.
Six Israelis, some of them minors, have been arrested in the killing of the Palestinian boy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the family of the victim on the phone and said on television, “We will not allow extremists, it doesn’t matter from which side, to inflame the region and cause bloodshed.”
Africa: At least 60 captive women are reported to have escaped from the Islamic militants Boko Haram while the gunmen were attacked a military base. They were among the 68 women abducted from a village last month. Boko Harem lost 53 men in their assault on an army base. The group still holds more than 200 school girls kidnapped in April.
Ukraine: Pro-Russian rebels are regrouping in the city of Donetsk after retreating from Slovyansk. With the military showing a new resolve to end the rebellion, a confrontation in the city of 1 million people could be messy. The rebels are asking Russian President Vladimir Putin for more help and as the Ukraine army increases the heat, they risk a losing war with their powerful neighbor.
World Cup: It’s down to the final four. Brazil meets Germany tomorrow. The Netherlands against Argentina Wednesday.
Flight 370: Malaysia is sending three more ships to join the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. The country’s defense minister Hishammuddin Hussein said, “The search will not stop until we find it.” The plane disappeared March 8 with 239 people on board. Both China and Australia have deep-sea survey ships involved in the search of the southern Indian Ocean.
Hear Me Now?: The TSA announced that passengers travelling from overseas to the US will have their cellphones and other devices checked to see whether they operate. It’s part of a recently stepped-up alert. Electronics that won’t power up will not be allowed on the plane.
The Obit Page: Former Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze has died at age 86. Together with then Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Shevardnadze demilitarized and eased tensions between Russia and neighboring countries. In 1992 Shevardnadze became the first leader of Georgia when it broke away from the Soviet Union.
Hey You: Pink Floyd is getting ready to release its first new album in 20 years to be called The Endless River. It’s based on 1994 recording sessions with the band’s late keyboard player Rick Wright. It might not be a full reunion of the band because, like a lot of bands, they have members who hate each other … for Pink Floyd it’s singer Roger Waters and guitarist Dave Gilmour.
Set, Match: Novak Djokovic of Serbia beat seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer yesterday for a second championship himself. The sets in a drawn out battle were 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4. With this win, Djokovic knocks Rafael Nadal of Spain out of the No. 1 ranking in the world.
Need to Know: Hunky 26-year-old Zac Efron is dating 35-year-old cougar Michelle Rodriguez. Miley Cyrus got a tattoo of her dead dog on her left ribcage. Photo analysts say the leader of the Islamic militants ISIS in Iraq wears a $7,000 watch. Texas Gov. Rick Perry says President Obama is somehow behind the surge of illegal immigrants coming over the border.
