A Thin Margin, Conflict of Interest

Vol. 5, No. 258
The Numbers: A new NY Times poll says that among likely voters Hillary Clinton holds a thin margin over Donald Trump of just 46 to 44 percent. When the poll includes the two third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, Trump and Clinton are tied at 42 percent. Clinton holds a wide lead among college graduates, but, interestingly, the candidates basically spilt the vote of white women.
Conflict of Interest: Newsweek reports that if Donald Trump becomes president and both he and his children fail to sever all ties with his international web of business, he’d hardly be able to do anything without serving or conflicting with his own interests.
Little attention has been paid during the campaign to Trump, The Business. Kurt Eichenwald writes that Trump has business entanglements with “global financiers, foreign politicians and even criminals.” He says, “As a private enterprise, its businesses, partners and investors are hidden from public view, even though they are the very people who could be enriched by—or will further enrich—Trump and his family if he wins the presidency.”
Eichenwald writes, “If Trump moves into the White House and his family continues to receive any benefit from the company, during or even after his presidency, almost every foreign policy decision he makes will raise serious conflicts of interest and ethical quagmires.”
Reality Candidate: Donald Trump revealed the results of his latest physical exam to Dr. Mehmet Oz during a taping of the television doctor’s show to be aired today. The 6-2 Trump weighs 267 pounds, which is “obese” by medical standards, and takes a statin to control cholesterol.
A statement from the The Dr. Oz Show said Oz took Trump “through a full review of systems including the following: nervous system; head and neck; hormone levels; cardiovascular health and related medications; respiratory health; gastrointestinal health; bladder or prostate health; dermatological health; history of cancer.” All from a one-page report Trump handed to the doctor.
Secretive Candidate: Hillary Clinton’s campaign released a letter from her doctor saying she is recovering well from bacterial pneumonia, which is not contagious. “The remainder of her complete physical exam was normal and she is in excellent mental condition,” the letter said.
Clinton is expected to return to campaigning today.
The doctor’s letter says Clinton’s cholesterol and blood pressure are within normal ranges. She takes medication for an underactive thyroid and a blood thinner following a 2012 concussion and blood clot in her head while she was secretary of state, according to the doctor.
The National Disgrace: In a batch of leaked emails, former Secy. of State Colin Powell calls Donald Trump a “national disgrace” and an “international pariah.” Powell also called Trump “racist” for questioning the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate.
In one email he said, “To go on and call him an idiot just emboldens him.”
Powell is not wowed by Hillary Clinton, either. “Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris,” he wrote.
On the Run: The White House said it wants to increase the number of international refugees entering the country next fiscal year from 85,000 to 110,000. The fiscal year begins Oct. 1 and, of course, the plan depends on who becomes president in January.
No Gay No Play: Following the NCAA, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced it is moving neutral site championships out of North Carolina this year because of its law allowing discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender people. That includes the football title game in December and the women’s basketball tournament in March.
Mistrust: Americans’ trust in the mass media “to report the news fully, accurately and fairly” has dropped to its lowest level ever at 32 percent, according to a new Gallup Poll. It’s down eight points from just last year. Trust in the media hit its peak of 72 percent in 1976 during the Watergate scandal and Vietnam war.
The biggest drop in trust is among Republicans, down from 32 percent last year to 14 percent now. In the “post factual world,” they don’t believe the press, but they do believe Donald Trump.
