Cuomo Accuser Speaks, Afghanistan Falling

Handsy Andy: The formerly anonymous woman who filed a criminal complaint against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo spoke openly to CBS News and The Albany Times Union newspaper, telling them that “What he did to me was a crime. He broke the law.”

The interview aired this morning. Brittany Commisso, 33, was identified in the New York attorney general’s report only as “Executive Assistant #1.” Last week she filed a criminal complaint against Cuomo with the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.

“It was the right thing to do. The governor needs to be held accountable,” she said in the interview. Commisso is one of 11 women whose claims of sexual abuse were detailed in the AG’s report issued last week.

Commisso said, “There started to be hugs with kisses on the cheek, and then there was at one point a hug, and then when he went to go kiss me on the cheek, he quickly turned his head and then he kissed me on the lips.”

She said, “These were not hugs he would give his mother or brother.”

Commisso described another moment when the governor was showing her pictures on the wall in the executive offices when Cuomo put his hand on her back in a way she assumed was to direct her attention, and then he “slid his hand past my butt.”

“I kind of froze. … He didn’t say anything,” Commisso said. “And he didn’t do it in a way that was blatant. I think that that was the first time that he wanted to see what he could get away with.”

And she described a moment when he slid his hand up her blouse.

Cuomo has denied those incidents or anything like them ever happened as his world crumbles around him. Late yesterday his top aide, Melissa DeRosa, who has stood by the governor during his personal troubles and the pandemic, resigned. A state assembly committee is expected to consider impeachment today.

Afghanistan Falling: With the last American troops pulling out in weeks, the extremist Taliban yesterday captured the northern commercial hub of Kunduz as well as two other regional capitals.

American-trained Afghan troops are collapsing in front of the onslaught and it’s looking inevitable that the whole country will fall once again under the harsh Muslim fundamentalist regime of the Taliban.

With a population of 374,000, Kunduz is a vital commercial center near the border with Tajikistan. The Taliban took the city briefly in both 2015 and 2016 but were pushed out by Afghan forces.

The Taliban have also nibbled at the edges of  major cities like Kandahar and Lashkar Gah in the south and Herat in the west.

Viral News: Recently surfaced video from a July political fundraiser in Alabama featuring Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene showed attendees cheering when the Republican firebrand pointed out that the state had one of the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates in the country.

As health authorities fight vaccination stupidity, the country is registering an average of 100,000 new cases a day of Covid-19, returning to levels not seen since February. New cases dropped significantly during the vaccine rollout, but vaccine resistance and the delta variant of the coronavirus are making for a Covid comeback.

Some state governors and legislatures have actually banned mandatory safety measures. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is taking heat as intensive care hospital beds are filling with new cases. Abbott has said Texans must rely on personal responsibility rather than government mandates.

But Mayor Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio said, “The governor has shown a callous disregard for life and safety in defiance of clear medical guidance and is risking the safety of our children and the recovery of our economy.”

In Arkansas, Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas is actually apologizing for signing a law that banned mask mandates. “It was an error to sign that law,” he said on the CBS program “Face the Nation.” “I admit that.”

The Obit Page: Sergei Kovalev, the determined adversary of Soviet totalitarianism who continued on to campaign against the post-Communist leaders Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin, has died at 91. — Actress Markie Post, the actress known for her roles on the television series “Night Court” and “The Fall Guy” and the movie “There’s Something About Mary,” has died of cancer in Los Angeles. She was only 70. — Bobby Bowden, the coach often described as “legendary” who made Florida State into a football power, died at age 91. We’re waiting for the day when a college professor is described as  “legendary.”

Five Ring Roundup: On the final day of the Olympics, the US women’s basketball team crushed Japan 90-75, winning the gold medal for the 7th Olympics in a row.

The US women’s volleyball team beat Brazil to win their first ever Olympic gold.

American runner  Allison Felix was part of the 4×400 meter relay team, winning her 11th Olympic medal. The 35-year-old track star beat the American record of 10 medals in track and field set by Carl Lewis in 1996. Put that woman on a Wheaties box. Paavo Nurmi of Finland still holds the world record at 12 medals.

The US won the medal race with 39 gold and 113 overall. China finished  a close second in the gold pursuit with 38 and 88 medals total.

And by the way, American women won 25 more medals than the men.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
