Meghan Tabloid Horror!: Buckingham Palace has yet to issue a public reaction to the blockbuster interview Oprah Winfrey did with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, but the British tabloids were quick to jump in. The interview aired on British television last night and here are a few of the headlines:
–The Daily Telegraph: “Harry and Meghan embody the woke generation.”
–Daily Mirror: “They asked how dark Archie’s skin would be”
–Daily Express: “SO SAD IT HAS COME TO THIS”
–Daily Mail: “MEGHAN ACCUSES PALACE OF RACISM”
–Daily Star: “FIGHTS … CAMERA”
The Sun went so far as to consult what they described as a body-language expert who analyzed how the couple sat and held hands.
The British tabloids, which love to feed on the royal family, are one of the primary reasons the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left royal life for sunny Southern California.
The American tabloids are not innocent. The NY Post reports that Markle’s half-sister claims Meghan has “narcissistic personality disorder” and compares Harry to a hostage with Stockholm Syndrome, becoming sympathetic with his captor.
The Nut Graf: Boiling down the interview, Harry and Meghan’s conflict with the royal family and palace keepers appears to come down to race. Meghan is bi-racial.
None of this matters to the workings of the world, except that the British royal family, which presides over a country that long ago went multi-racial, is struggling and failing to deal with race in their own house.
The palace told the couple, without explanation, that their first born child, Archie, would not get a royal title or security coverage. Markle told Winfrey, “In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time . . . so we have in tandem the conversation of ‘He won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”
When Harry and Meghan started pulling away from royal life, he was cut from the family payroll, and has since been stripped of the customary military titles held by royal men.
By comparison, Harry’s uncle Andrew, who’s living in isolated disgrace after having been identified as a participant in the Jeffrey Epstein sex ring, still gets paid and holds his titles.
Border Crisis: The Biden administration is suddenly dealing with a wave of unaccompanied children that have come over the southern border and are being held in federal facilities.
At least 3,200 children are being held in Customs and Border Patrol facilities, as many as 1,400 of them beyond the three-day limit. Under the law, children are supposed to be moved to shelters, but capacity is limited because of the pandemic.
Immigrants appear to be coming in greater numbers under the belief that they will fare better under President Biden than they did under the immigrant-hostile Donald Trump.
New Rules!: The centers for Disease Control says people fully vaccinated for the coronavirus can safely visit with each other. People are considered “fully vaccinated” two weeks after their final shot and there’s growing evidence that fully vaccinated people cannot spread Covid-19.
The new CDC guidelines say fully vaccinated people can:
- Visit other vaccinated people indoors without masks or physical distancing
- Visit indoors with unvaccinated people from a single household without masks or physical distancing if the unvaccinated people are at low risk for severe disease.
- Skip quarantine and testing if exposed to someone who has Covid-19 but are asymptomatic, but should monitor for symptoms for 14 days
As of this morning, 60 million Americans have been vaccinated, just over 18 percent of the population.
The Spin Rack: The murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was delayed for a day while prosecutors attempted to add a charge of third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd. Chauvin is already charged with second-degree murder, unintentional, and manslaughter. — The Biden administration is re-examining rules created by former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos that gave greater protections to students accused of sexual assault. Rules under the Obama administration had leaned heavily in favor of accusers — The South Dakota legislature has passed a bill that restricts transgender women athletes from competing on high school and college girls’ and women’s teams.
The Obit Page: Carla Wallenda, the last surviving child of Karl Wallenda, who founded the high-wire balancing act, The Flying Wallendas, has died at age 85. She was taught to balance on a wire when she was a toddler and performed until she was 82.
Carla’s signature stunt was doing a head stand on top of a “sway pole” 100 feet in the air.
The troupe was known for its seven-person pyramid with four acrobats on the wire supporting two on the next tier, with the seventh sitting at the top on a chair. It was a death-defying act, until it wasn’t. The pyramid collapsed during a performance in 1962 and two members of the troupe were killed.
Over the years, Carla’s father, husband, and aunt all died in falls. The accidents didn’t deter her. “Accidents can happen anyplace,” she told The Sarasota Herald Tribune in 2014. “I have to make a living, and this is the only way I know or want to.”
To The Dog House: CNN reports that President Biden’s two German shepherds have been moved back to the family home in Delaware after one of them bit a member of the security staff. The perpetrator was Major, a three-year-old rescue.
