State Capitols Threatened, Article Introduced

Urgent Threat: As House Democrats introduced a single article of impeachment against President Trump, the FBI issued a warning about plots for armed protests in all 50 state capitols if the President is removed before his term is done.

And just as homeland security is threatened, Acting Secretary for Homeland Security Chad Wolf resigned, dodging responsibility for handling what’s to come in the next two weeks, including protecting the inauguration.

Antigovernment organizations have called for actions in all 50 states on Jan. 17th, three days before the inauguration. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said “everybody is on high alert.” Security is stepped up at the Michigan and Wisconsin capitols, where workers are boarding up windows.

As many as 15,000 members of the National Guard will be on duty in Washington.

Wolf told employees of Homeland Security that he quit because of court rulings that voided some of the Trump immigration policies on the grounds that Wolf was unlawfully appointed.  There was no particular reason for him to act on that yesterday.

Duel at Diablo: The Democrats are planning to vote today to call on Vice President Mike Pence to remove Trump under the 25th Amendment. If that doesn’t work, they’ll vote on impeachment tomorrow.

The 25th would be immediate than impeachment. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, “The president’s threat to America is urgent, and so too will be our action

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland said, “Whether impeachment can pass the United States Senate is not the issue. The issue is we have a president who most of us believe participated in encouraging an insurrection and attack on this building, and on democracy and trying to subvert the counting of the presidential ballot.”

The article of impeachment says Trump in his speech the morning of January 6th “willfully made statements that, in context, encouraged – and foreseeably resulted in – lawless action at the Capitol such as: ‘if you don’t fight like hell you’re not going to have a country anymore.’”

The impeachment article also says Trump’s attempts to get the Georgia secretary of state to change the vote  “threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of government.”

The impeachment cites a lesser-known clause of the Constitution, section 3 of the 14th Amendment, that says no sworn member of the government “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

Impeachment or removal wouldn’t necessarily be the end of it for Trump. Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution says, “the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.” He could go to prison instead of Mar-a-Lago.

Back the Badge: The Capitol Hill Police force has suspended at least two of its members for their actions during the Capitol takeover. One was the cop seen having a selfie taken with a rioter. The other had put on a Trump MAGA hat and guided rioters into the building.

At least 10 to 15 other Capitol Hill officers are under investigation

The Money Poll: Some big corporations and financial organizations that routinely give money to politicians and their causes are hitting pause and re-assessing how and where they give their influence money.

Goldman Sachs is freezing donations through its Political Action Committee and will conduct “a thorough assessment of how people acted during this period,” a spokesman said. JPMorgan Chase is halting donations for six months and  Citigroup is postponing all campaign contributions for a quarter.

Marriott hotels said it would suspend donations “to those who voted against certification of the election,” a spokeswoman told DealBook.

Viral News: President-elect Joe Biden received his second dose of the coronavirus vaccine yesterday. He told reporters he’s confident his administration be able to vaccinate 50 million people in his first 100 days. The vaccination effort has been stumbling so far.

This morning, another 1,942 Americans have died of Covid-19.

Rolling Stop: In a big hit to the ailing Brazilian economy, Ford Motors said it’s going to stop making cars and trucks in that country. Ford’s business in Brazil has been struggling for years and slow sales during the  pandemic has forced them to hit the exit bar.

Ford says it will continue selling cars and trucks in Brazil to be imported from Argentina, Uruguay, and other countries.

The Obit Page: Neil Sheehan, the Vietnam War correspondent and Pulitzer-winning author who obtained the infamous Pentagon Papers exposing the failings of government in its prosecution of the war, has died at 84 of Parkinson’s disease.

Sheehan covered the war from 1962 to 1966 for United Press International and The Times. He later spent nine years researching and writing his Pulitzer-winning book,   “A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam.”

The book was an examination of the war through the experience of an Army officer turned civilian adviser. Reviewing it in the Times, Ronald Steel wrote, “If there is one book that captures the Vietnam War in the sheer Homeric scale of its passion and folly, this book is it.”

The Bulletin Board: New England Patriot football coach Bill Belichick has refused to accept the Medal of Freedom from President Trump because of last week’s Capitol riot. — In Texas, ironically, many of the legislators are already armed in advance of any demonstrations. They carry all the time. One of them told The NY Times, “I have a pistol on my hip as we speak.”

  Don’t mess with Texas.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
