Anger and Delusion, Falwell Falls Badly

A Dark and Stormy Night: Speakers at the Republican virtual convention last night presented a dark, angry, and delusional vision of America in which Democrats are socialists who want to take your guns and President Trump’s handling of the pandemic has been a great success.
Notably, Donald Trump Jr.’s girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle came out shouting, and shouting, “I speak to you tonight as a mother, a former prosecutor, a Latina, and a proud American, and yes, a proud supporter of President Donald J. Trump.”
With a name like Guilfoyle, wasn’t it obvious she’s Latina?
Guilfoyle said, “Biden, Harris, and the rest of the Socialists will fundamentally change this nation. They want open borders, closed schools, dangerous amnesty, and will selfishly send your jobs back to China while they get rich. They will defund, dismantle, and destroy America’s law enforcement. When you are in trouble and need police, don’t count on the Democrats.”
Speeches were loaded with buzzwords and phrases planted to stir fear and anger; “socialist,” “defund,” “dismantle,” “cancel,” “cosmopolitan,” “elites,” and “government healthcare.”
Donald Trump Jr. said the coronavirus is “courtesy of the Chinese Communist Party.” Giving truth a long stretch, Junior said, “People of faith are under attack. You’re not allowed to go to church, but mass chaos in the streets gets a pass. It’s almost like this election is shaping up to be church, work and school versus rioting, looting, and vandalism, or in the words of Biden and the Democrats, ‘peaceful protesting.’”
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who clearly has her eye one day on the presidency, said, “Their vision for America is socialism. And we know that socialism has failed everywhere. They want to tell Americans how to live, what to think, they want a government takeover of healthcare. They want to ban fracking and kill millions of jobs.”
We’ll end here with the note that about 55 million Americans have lost their jobs since the coronavirus swept through the US under Donald Trump.
Viral News: A 33-year-old man has been infected with the coronavirus a second time, but his immune system kicked in and he developed no symptoms, researchers in Hong Kong reported.
“The second infection was completely asymptomatic — his immune response prevented the disease from getting worse,” Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale told The NY Times . “It’s kind of a textbook example of how immunity should work,” he said.
It’s encouraging news, but scientists still don’t know enough about the potential danger of second infection with the virus. The best way to develop what’s called “herd immunity” is a vaccine.
As of this morning, 177,284 Americans have died of the virus, 475 of them since yesterday. China, where the virus originated, has reported 4,711 deaths.
Black and Unarmed: Demonstrations in Kenosha, Wisconsin last night turned to arson and looting after the police shooting Sunday of an unarmed black man.
The cops had been called to a domestic complaint. A video shows the man, Jacob Blake, wearing a white tank top walking around the front of his SUV headed toward the driver’s door, followed by two cops, one with his gun drawn on Blake’s back. As Blake opens the car door, the officer with the gun grabs the tail of Blake’s shirt and fires seven times.
Blake is in critical condition. Blake’s children, 3,5, and 8, were in the car, but unharmed.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said, “While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.”
The police union representing the officers urged the public to withhold judgment until the state Justice Department completes its investigation. “As always, the video currently circulating does not capture all the intricacies of a highly dynamic incident. We ask that you withhold from passing judgement until all the facts are known and released,” said Pete Deates, president of the Kenosha Professional Police Association.
The Bickersons: Fifteen-year-old Claudia Conway says just because her mother quit the White House and her father put a plug in his political opinions, that doesn’t make everything OK. She’s got three siblings and tweeted, “They didn’t even talk about it with any of us …just tweeted about it as if this is going to change anything and make me not emancipate myself.”
Her mother, Kellyanne Conway, announced her resignation from the Trump administration shortly after Claudia said she wanted a legal split from the family.
Claudia tweeted, “i’m not getting emancipated because of my mom’s job.. it is because of years of childhood trauma and abuse.”
The Bulletin Board: German doctors say Aleksei Navalny, the Russian dissident who fell ill a flight to Moscow last week, was poisoned, but they have yet to identify the specific agent. — Coastal areas in Louisiana and Texas are issuing evacuation orders in preparation for tropical storm Laura, which is expected to strengthen to a Category 3 hurricane.
God and Sex at Liberty University: Jerry Falwell, Jr., the evangelical leader has resigned from running Liberty University in a good old-fashioned Christian sex scandal.
Falwell was already on leave because of a vacation photo of him standing with his pants unzipped next to a woman who was not his wife, also unzipped.
Now we’re getting to the good stuff.
A former business partner of Falwell and his wife says he used to have sex with Becki Falwell while her husband watched. Giancarlo Granda says the three met when he was 20 and working as a pool attendant at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel in March 2012. Granda told Reuters, “Becki and I developed an intimate relationship and Jerry enjoyed watching from the corner of the room.”
That’s the kind of Christian sex scandal we’ve come to know and love.
