Warning Signs: Re-opening the country too soon could create a second wave of Covid-19 disease, the country’s top epidemiologist testified by video before Congress yesterday.
Speaking from his home to an eerily empty hearing room, Dr. Anthony Fauci said, “There is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control.”
Fauci said a second wave would bring “some suffering and death that could be avoided,” and it “could even set you back on the road to trying to get economic recovery.”
With the death toll still rising in the US — the highest in the world by far — President Trump is declaring victory. “We have met the moment and we have prevailed,” he said Monday.
But in his testimony, Fauci said a vaccine is still many months away and a return of the virus could be devastating.
The Stat Board: Another 1,705 Americans died of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 82,389. More than 1.3 million Americans have been infected.
Cases are rising in some local areas and states. Illinois has had a dramatic spike, with 3,601 deaths. New Jersey has had 9,508 deaths.
The NY Times reports according to cellphone data that locked-down Americans are starting to get up and move around, raising the risk of spreading the disease. The paper reports that, “As more states began to relax restrictions, about 25 million more people ventured outside their homes on an average day last week than during the preceding six weeks.”
The Supremes: In tele-arguments before the Supreme Court yesterday, President Trump’s lawyers argued that responding to a criminal investigation would be a burden that would prevent the president from doing his job. Attorney Jay Sekulow said the supremacy clause in Article II of the constitution shields the President. He argued that fulfilling the Manhattan district attorney’s demand for financial records would open the door for investigations from all over the country. He said, “You can’t just look at the one subpoena. It is the potential for 2300 DAs, or just 1% of them … 23 DA’s issuing process against the president.”
Sekulow said, “Our position is that the constitution itself, both in structure and text, supports the position that the president would be temporarily immune from this activity from a state proceeding while he is the President of the United States.”
Battleground: A Republican candidate has taken back a California congressional seat north of Los Angeles lost to a Democrat in 2018. Mike Garcia has soundly defeated Christy Smith. The seat was left empty by Democrat Katie Hill who resigned in a sex scandal. Yesterday’s returns were almost the statistical reverse of 2018 with the Republican taking 56 percent of the vote and the Democrat, 44.
The Bulletin Board: The spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. — A judge has temporarily blocked the Justice Department’s move to dismiss criminal charges against former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who has pleaded guilty, twice. — House Democrats have proposed another $3 trillion economic relief bill. — Los Angeles County’s top health official said she expects coronavirus restrictions to stray in place at least through July. — A Mexican cartel boss serving time for decapitating 12 people has died in prison of the coronavirus.
At Long Last, Mr. President: Two of President Trump’s favorite ploys to solidify his power are to discredit the press and accuse other people of crimes; “Lock her up.”
Lately he’s been after former President Barack Obama and television host Joe Scarborough. Trump yesterday repeated his accusation that the former congressman may have murdered an intern. The President tweeted, “When will they open a Cold Case on the Psycho Joe Scarborough matter in Florida. Did he get away with murder? Some people think so.”
Trump could just have well said, “I have a list in my hand.”
An autopsy and investigation determined that Lori Klausutis, who interned for Scarborough when he was a Republican Congressman in 2001, fell, hit her head, and died of the head injury. The autopsy showed that Klausutis had an undiagnosed heart condition that may have caused her to faint.
Trump has also been intimating that President Obama committed a crime involving the Russian election-influencing investigation, but he won’t say exactly what the crime may have been. Pressed by the Washington Post’s Phillip Rucker, Trump said, “You know what the crime is. The crime is very obvious to everybody. All you have to do is read the newspapers, except yours.”
Punchy: Retired boxer Mike Tyson is suggesting that he’ll go back in the ring. Tyson revealed himself sparring in a Facebook live stream saying, “Anything’s possible. I feel unstoppable now. The gods of war have reawakened me, ignited my ego and want me to go to war again.” He’s 53 years old and taken a few punches.
