Threat of Force, Convincing the President

Hong Kong: Threatening to use lethal force, police in Hong Kong have cornered pro-Democracy protesters at Hong Kong Polytechnic University after a fiery night in which demonstrators used Molotov cocktails and shot a cop with an arrow. Police used teargas and rubber bullets on the occupiers.

After the police cordoned off the campus, some protesters tried to escape but were captured or turned back.

The demonstrators are not non-violent. They have armed themselves with projectile-throwing catapults as well as bows and arrows. In some previous incidents in which the police have fired guns, they were being attacked by demonstrators.

Inquiring Minds: President Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton met privately with President Trump in August in an attempt to convince Trump to release $391 million in military assistance to Ukraine, according to the transcript of testimony by a senior National Security Council aide released Saturday.

The aide, Timothy Morrison, said that according to Bolton, Trump “simply said he wasn’t ready to do it.”

Morrison’s testimony brings the impeachment case one step closer to holding Trump directly accountable for withholding the Ukraine aid, but it also confirms the importance of Bolton as a potential witness who has so far dodge the hearing rooms. Bolton has expressed a willingness to testify, but has asked for a court ruling on whether he can defy Trump’s non-cooperation order.

Trump released the money in September after Bolton resigned under pressure from Republicans.

The case for impeachment is coming together at times with small building blocks. Jennifer Williams, a longtime State Department employee, testified that Trump told Vice President Mike Pence to skip the inauguration of Ukraine’s new President Volodymyr Zelensky, an insult designed to pressure him to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden.

Williams also listened to the infamous July 25th phone call with Zelensky and found Trump’s demands “unusual and inappropriate.” Trump responded with a personal attack on Twitter saying, “She should meet with the other Never Trumpers, who I don’t know & mostly never even heard of, & work out a better presidential attack!”

Sorry ‘Bout That: In an attempt to eliminate one of his biggest political liabilities, presidential-candidate-to-be Michael Bloomberg apologized to the congregation of an all-black church in New York for his infamous “stop and frisk” policing policy.

Millions of black and Latino people in New York were stopped, questioned, and frisked probable cause. The policy was seen as racist.

Speaking at the Christian Cultural Center in East New York, Bloomberg slightly choked up when he said, “I got something important wrong. I got something important really wrong. I didn’t understand back then, the full impact that stops were having on the black and Latino communities.”

Bloomberg is expected to announce his late entry to the Democratic presidential race. His apology is unlikely to quash the issue if he survives for any length of time as a contender.

The Bulletin Board: A shooting at a backyard football party in Fresno, California yesterday left four people dead and six wounded. —- President Trump made a two-hour unscheduled visit Saturday to Walter Reed hospital for what the White House described as part of a routine medical checkup. It has the curious wondering whether something is wrong. — Louisiana’s Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards won re-election by a comfortable margin, making him the second Democrat to win the governor’s race in a predominantly Republican state. — A host at a conservative radio station in Denver was fired while he was still on the air Saturday morning. After criticizing President Trump. Managers cut the switches on Craig Silverman, a former local prosecutor, and went to network news.  Silverman said the station’s program director came through the door and told him, “You’re done.”

The Obit Page: Werner Doehner, the last survivor of the Hindenburg zeppelin disaster that killed three dozen people in 1937, died on Nov. 8 in Laconia, New Hampshire at age 90.

Doehner was only 8 when he spent three days crossing the Atlantic with his parents, brother, and sister. The 800-foot helium-filled German zeppelin burst into flames as it approached for landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. Static electricity ignited a hydrogen leak and the airship burned completely in half a minute.

Doehner’s father and sister were among those killed. His mother threw him and his brother out a window before jumping herself. The survivors of the family spent months in the hospital recovering from burns.

Fourth and 100: Blacklisted quarterback Colin Kaepernick bailed out of an NFL-sponsored demonstration workout over the weekend and staged his own an hour away. The 32-year-old QB was supposed to work out in front of representatives from all the NFL teams, a chance to get a job, but he objected to the event being closed to the press. Only seven scouts showed up for his alternate event.

Kaepernick was let go from the San Francisco 49ers after repeatedly taking a knee in protest during the National Anthem. Despite injuries to other quarterbacks in the league, and teams having losing seasons, no one has picked up Kaepernick. “I’ve been ready for three years,” he said. “I’ve been denied for three years.”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
